Colombia<\/strong>.- Abelardo De La Espriella officially announced the new Minister of Health for his government: it is Ana Mar\u00eda Vesga, the executive director of Acemi, the association that groups the EPS of the contributory regime. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The health of Colombians cannot wait any longer. For too long, millions of families have suffered the consequences of a system in crisis. That reality is beginning to change. Today I welcome Ana Mar\u00eda Vesga as Minister of Health of the Miracle Homeland,” said the Colombian president on his social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With this appointment, De La Espriella has almost finalized his cabinet for the start of his term. Only the appointment of the future Minister of Science remains. On the other hand, it also marks a distance from Gustavo Petro’s government, as he appoints as minister the person who always warned him about the lack of resources and the insufficiency of the capitation payment unit (UPC) for the operation of the EPS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Your task will be to lead an emergency plan to guarantee timely care, supply of medicines, stability for human talent in health, and the financial sanitation of the sector, while we build a more efficient, transparent, solidary, and strengthened model in the regions<\/strong>,” said the Colombian president in his message. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vesga’s profile<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ana Mar\u00eda Vesga is a Colombian lawyer from the Universidad de los Andes, an institution where she also completed studies in Senior Management and Strategic Leadership. She is currently the executive president of Acemi, the guild that brings together the main EPS of the contributory regime, from where she has become one of the main interlocutors regarding the health system crisis,<\/strong> the financing of the model, and proposals for its strengthening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before entering the healthcare sector, she spent a significant part of her career in the oil and mining industries. She was Executive Vice President and Business Development Manager at Integral de Servicios T\u00e9cnicos, General Manager of Latco Drilling, and a senior lawyer specializing in Oil & Gas at the firm C\u00e1rdenas & C\u00e1rdenas.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2018, she was appointed Executive Director of the Pharmaceutical Industry Chamber of the National Business Association of Colombia (ANDI). At that time, the organization highlighted her experience in business strategy, business development, planning, and project management. For nearly six years, she remained at ANDI, where she also assumed leadership of the Health Vice Presidency,<\/strong> consolidating herself as one of the main representatives of the business sector related to healthcare and the pharmaceutical industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Subsequently, he\/she reached the executive presidency of Acemi, the guild that represents the EPS of the contributory regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Although her name is closely linked to the healthcare sector today, her professional career began in the hydrocarbon industry. As she describes on her LinkedIn profile, she worked for 15 years in that sector before making a professional pivot that led her to the field of health, where she has held important trade association positions in Colombia and Latin America over the last few years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


“I believe that health systems are ecosystems in constant evolution. That one learns and unlearns. That there is no perfect formula. The important thing is to work for the patients, generate well-being for the population, and creatively seek how to ensure more and better health with always limited resources,” she states in her professional profile, where she also points out that she is convinced of the strengths of the Colombian system and the need to work for its strengthening<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
