Caracas<\/strong>.- Venezuela demolished a first building this Thursday in La Guaira (north), the region devastated by the earthquakes of last June 24, after experts declared it to be in a state of structural risk, the Government reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Ministry of Communication, it was the first controlled demolition in that coastal state adjacent to Caracas, which was coordinated by technical teams and engineers in “strict compliance with safety standards.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Minister of Interior, Diosdado Cabello, who was at the scene, assured that the result “has been as expected<\/strong>” and that the operation also included explosives experts, firefighters, and members of the Armed Forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Safety tests were conducted, the entire perimeter was evacuated at the time, the building fell as planned<\/strong>,” stated the high-ranking official in a video published by the state channel Venezolana de Televisi\u00f3n (VTV) on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The authorities estimate that at least 856 buildings were affected<\/strong> and 190 collapsed as a result of the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes that shook the northern part of the Caribbean country, which left more than 5,500 dead, at least 16,740 injured, and nearly 18,000 people homeless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The World Bank estimates direct physical damages<\/a> at 19.6 billion dollars and recently warned that a slow reconstruction could hinder the oil-producing country’s economic recovery over the next decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of Monday, more than 30,000 buildings had been inspected, according to Venezuelan authorities, who announced the start of construction of 1,875 homes for those affected.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
