Tokyo<\/strong>.- Local authorities raised the death toll to 35 this Friday following the 7.1 magnitude earthquake that struck southwestern Japan on Tuesday, as rescue teams continue to search for people trapped under the rubble of a shopping center that suffered an explosion, allegedly due to a gas leak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the 35 dead, there are hundreds of injured with varying degrees of severity, while, according to the authorities of Kumamoto prefecture, more than 9,000 people remain in evacuation centers amidst a wave of extreme heat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Almost 72 hours after the earthquake, a mark that experts point to as critical for finding survivors, search operations continue for those trapped under the remains of the establishment, operated by Aeon Mall in the town of Kashima, which recorded an explosion after the quake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Twelve people were rescued from under the rubble of the building, following an explosion in which seven people died and five others were injured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Search efforts continue, but the early hours were marked by the initial “extreme tension,” recalled one of the doctors involved, Mototaka Inaba, from the NGO Peace Winds Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It was a many-hour operation and there were a large number of rescuers working tirelessly under intense heat. Given that it was reported that there were still people trapped, no one gave up and they continued rescuing with great firmness,” said Inaba in a press conference, who recently returned to Japan after collaborating in the rescue and relief efforts for the double earthquake in Venezuela.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The earthquake in southwestern Japan reached the maximum on the 7-level Japanese scale, which focuses on measuring surface shaking and destructive potential, also causing significant material damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
