La Paz.- <\/strong>The president of Bolivia, Rodrigo Paz,<\/a> maintained this Thursday that former president Evo Morales (2006-2019) must appear before the Justice system to clarify his alleged “responsibilities” in the protests and road blockades recorded between May and June in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paz referred to the matter in response to a media inquiry regarding the arrest warrant issued on Wednesday by the Prosecutor’s Office against Morales for crimes such as terrorism and armed uprising, as part of an investigation into his alleged involvement in the protests with which some sectors demanded the president’s resignation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Rights are respected here, and he should appear wherever he is summoned to clarify his responsibilities if that were to be the case,” he maintained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paz mentioned that he himself had to appear before the Justice system “16 times” during the Morales administration and another five times during the Luis Arce administration (2020-2025), so the former president “will have to, like every Bolivian, face that process” for the recent conflicts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Prosecutor’s Office is investigating Morales in a case that includes two other union leaders and was opened following a complaint filed in early July by civic leaders from Santa Cruz, the most populous region and economic engine of Bolivia, to which the Ministry of Government (Interior) subsequently joined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For seven weeks, between May and June, farmers from La Paz and the Bolivian Workers’ Center (COB) promoted road blockades, mainly in western and central Bolivia, with the support of groups affiliated with Morales, to demand the resignation of Paz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The protests caused shortages of food, fuel, and medical oxygen in several cities, left at least 16 dead, 13 of them due to the lack of timely medical attention caused by the blockades, and resulted in economic losses exceeding 3 billion dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conflicts ceased after the Government reached agreements with sectors such as the COB and decreed a state of emergency on June 20 to lift the road blockades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since October 2024, Morales has remained in the Tr\u00f3pico de Cochabamba (center), his political and union stronghold, guarded by hundreds of his followers to prevent the execution of an arrest warrant against him for an investigation into aggravated human trafficking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In that case, the former president is accused of his alleged relationship with a minor with whom he supposedly had a daughter while he was president in 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
