Lima<\/strong>.- Former Peruvian President Ollanta Humala (2011-2016), who had been serving a 15-year prison sentence since April 2025 for money laundering in the irregular financing of his electoral campaigns, was released from prison this Friday after his case was annulled, having been classified by the Constitutional Court as an illegal process without foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Humala left the Barbadillo penitentiary, the prison built in Peru exclusively to house former presidents, where former leaders Alejandro Toledo (2001-2006), Mart\u00edn Vizcarra (2018-2020), and Pedro Castillo (2021-2022) currently remain, and through which the late Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000) also passed for more than a decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We have been victims of political and judicial persecution<\/strong>,” Humala expressed to the press, after leaving prison in a private car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“On April 15, 2025 (when I was sentenced), I was kidnapped by the State,” the former president added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I have never received campaign contributions from either Venezuela or Brazil,” he remarked.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Humala complained that, as a result of the ruling, he had to seek asylum for his wife (in Brazil) and take his children out of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I am reporting that we have been persecuted, to the point of having me detained in a prison,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Upon leaving the prison, located in eastern Lima, Humala was greeted by a group of supporters who chanted his name and was accompanied by his lawyers and some former party members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Peruvian judge ordered the release of Humala this Friday, after the country’s Constitutional Court annulled the process the day before that led to the former president being sentenced to fifteen years in prison for money laundering in the irregular financing of his presidential election campaigns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The magistrate of the First National Preparatory Investigation Court favorably granted the request from the former leader’s lawyers for the release to take place as soon as possible, as announced by the National Superior Court through its channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Humala had been in prison since April 2025, when he was convicted of money laundering in a case that the Constitutional Court has now established was illegal, considering that the money laundering charge lacked grounds and the concealment of donations for the electoral campaign was not classified as a crime at the time of the events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, the former president was also held in pretrial detention for the same case for ten months between 2017 and 2018, a measure that was also revoked by the Constitutional Court at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The money laundering case against Humala is based on the irregular financing of his 2006 and 2011 presidential campaigns for failing to declare alleged contributions of money from Chavismo and the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht, respectively, which led to him being sentenced to 15 years in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Constitutional Court established on Thursday that the entire process lacked validity because the concealment of donations for electoral campaigns was not considered a crime at the time of the events, nor has the Prosecutor’s Office managed to establish the necessary considerations to determine that there was money laundering in those operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ruling also benefits Humala’s wife, Nadine Heredia, who is currently seeking asylum in Brazil and had also been convicted in the same case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the ruling in favor of Humala, the president of Peru, Keiko Fujimori, who also benefited in a similar case thanks to the Constitutional Court, stated this Friday that her country lives “in a rule of law<\/strong>” and the resolution<\/a> must be complied with.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
