Rome.-<\/strong> Italy began this Saturday to implement random checks<\/strong> at airports and seaports for travelers arriving from Spain, following the decision by Giorgia Meloni’s<\/strong> government to temporarily suspend the Schengen Agreement<\/strong> due to the migration crisis in Ceuta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Rome’s Fiumicino airport, with an average of 55 daily flights from Spain<\/strong> during the summer season, EFE confirmed the entry into force of these controls coinciding with the arrival of commercial planes from cities such as Madrid, Barcelona, or Malaga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Agents of the Italian State Police have requested identity documents or passports from passengers arriving from Spain, both EU and non-EU citizens, upon exiting the aircraft to verify their nationality: a Spanish traveler confirmed to EFE that in his case, they asked for his document twice in the “finger” (jet bridge) that connects the plane to the terminal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Italian agents also made more selective documentation requests before leaving the airport, that is, in the public area where travelers are usually awaited after baggage claim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of these travelers commented to EFE that the request for documentation caused some minor congestion at the exit of the planes, although some of them were in agreement with the measure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Italian Government’s decision stemming from the Ceuta migration crisis<\/strong> and adopted with the argument of “protecting national security” consists of selective checks on third-country citizens arriving from Spain to ensure they possess the proper documentation to travel within the Schengen area.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Only in case of anomalies or suspicions will passengers “be subjected to additional checks,” according to Italian media reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the Italian far-right leader returned this Saturday to refer to the migration crisis in Ceuta to demand “the urgency of a European response to irregular immigration,” in a message on the social network X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meloni has promoted today together with her Danish counterpart, Mette Frederiksen<\/strong>, a letter signed by 22 other European countries to ask the leadership of the European Union<\/strong> for a meeting of the Interior ministers in order to coordinate the strengthening of the external borders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This is an important signal: the position that Italy has long defended is now shared by a growing number of European nations. Defending the Union’s external borders is not the interest of a single nation. It is a shared responsibility of Europe,” Meloni points out in her message.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
