Washington.-<\/strong> The President of the United States<\/strong>, Donald Trump<\/strong>, shared this Saturday in a message on his Truth Social network<\/strong> a map of Venezuela in which the Caribbean country appeared painted with the American flag and with the caption “51st State.”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is not the first time that the leader has toyed with the idea of the annexation of Venezuela to the United States<\/strong> since, on January 3rd, U.S. military forces captured the man who was president of the country, Nicol\u00e1s Maduro<\/strong>, and transferred him to New York, where he has remained ever since awaiting the start of a federal trial against him for narcoterrorism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On May 12, in statements to the television network Fox, Trump claimed that he was “seriously considering” making the Caribbean country the 51st state<\/strong> and, the following day, he uploaded to his social network a map of Venezuela shaded with the stars and stripes flag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since Maduro’s capture, the United States has exercised tutelage over the government of interim president Delcy Rodr\u00edguez, <\/strong>with the ultimate goal of achieving a democratic transition in Venezuela, but it has not established an electoral calendar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, Trump stated this Friday that Venezuela is still not “prepared” to hold elections, but assured that there has been “progress” in that regard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added, furthermore, that “Delcy has been doing a fantastic job”<\/strong> and highlighted the benefit that both U.S. companies and the Venezuelan people are achieving from the oil market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump’s message on his social network comes at a time when the Venezuelan Parliament and a group of opposition members have announced that they will begin talks,<\/strong> supported by Washington, starting this Saturday to promote democracy in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
