Lima.-<\/strong> The President of Peru, Keiko Fujimori<\/strong>, declared this Saturday that she confirmed to the United States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio<\/strong>, her country’s interest in becoming part of the ‘Shield of the Americas’,<\/strong> the international coalition promoted by the American leader, Donald Trump, to confront organized crime in a joint and transnational manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fujimori told reporters that last Thursday she had the opportunity to speak by phone with Rubio, who called her to congratulate her on the start of her government (2026-2031) in Peru.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In that dialogue, the president expressed to the Secretary of State her country’s interest in “becoming part of the ‘Shield of the Americas’, <\/strong>which seeks to unite the efforts of countries facing organized crime and share information”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“These types of scourges do not pay attention to borders, they invade continents,” stated Fujimori regarding the impact of organized crime in the region.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

“We would like to participate, it is in our best interest to participate, and the countries will also be interested in Peru participating,” added the head of state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the case of Peru, insecurity has become the main concern of its inhabitants following the rise of organized crime in the form of extortion against the population<\/strong> and businesses in populous areas, where criminal gangs demand money quotas under death threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sector most affected is urban transport buses in the capital, Lima, which have accumulated more than a hundred attacks since the beginning of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The inaugural summit convened by Trump in Florida in March was attended by a total of a dozen presidents from countries on the continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This meeting was attended by the presidents of Argentina, Javier Milei; Bolivia, Rodrigo Paz; Costa Rica, Rodrigo Chaves; Ecuador, Daniel Noboa; El Salvador, Nayib Bukele; Guyana, Irfaan Ali; Honduras, Nasry Asfura; Panama, Jos\u00e9 Ra\u00fal Mulino; Paraguay, Santiago Pe\u00f1a; and the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The current president of Chile, Jos\u00e9 Antonio Kast, was also there, who at that time had not yet assumed office and attended in his capacity as president-elect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
