S\u00e3o Paulo.-<\/strong> Between memories and brief references to his adversaries, the president of Brazil, Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva,<\/strong> made his candidacy for the October elections official this Sunday with promises of “less peace and love,” and more investment in defense, education, rare earths, and the fight against sexist violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“You have a Government that has delivered more than it promised and that will deliver much more. It only depends on you,”<\/strong> affirmed the progressive leader, seeking a fourth non-consecutive term, at an event with authorities, politicians, and hundreds of militants at the Expo Center Norte convention center in S\u00e3o Paulo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Previously, the leadership of the Workers’ Party (PT) proclaimed the ticket led by the current ruler, with the moderate Geraldo Alckmin as the candidate for the Vice Presidency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ceremony began at 10:00 local time (13:00 GMT) with informal interviews at the edge of the stage, in which the president of the progressive party, Edinho Silva, sealed the announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I want to say to all the militancy of the parties that are here: we homologate, we officialize now. Lula, president; (Geraldo) Alckmin, vice,” he celebrated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ruling party’s project will reach the polls backed by a broad coalition of seven progressive and center-left parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This demonstration of cohesion contrasts with the fragmented landscape of the conservative opposition, whose main candidate, Senator Fl\u00e1vio Bolsonaro, son of the far-right former president Jair Bolsonaro, is the target of attacks by the other right-wing aspirants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With his sights set on an upcoming term, Lula delivered his first official speech as a candidate in which he recalled his beginnings as a union leader and the origins of the PT, which he founded in 1980.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the political and trade storm with U.S. President Donald Trump, whose recent tariff offensive has monopolized the public agenda in recent weeks, the Republican did not feature in Lula’s speech, except for an isolated joke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the same vein, he avoided explicitly alluding to his electoral adversaries and limited himself to highlighting that his is “the only candidacy” that will not have to “tell a lie,” nor “invent something to tell the people” during the campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, he advocated for “being bolder to transform many things in this country,” if he is re-elected in October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In that sense, he anticipated a political struggle over prerogatives with the Legislative Branch, currently dominated by conservative sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Women, defense and rare earths<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Upon taking the microphone, the former union leader began the event with a self-criticism regarding the lack of female speakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After having listened to the speeches by Alckmin and the candidate for governor of S\u00e3o Paulo and his former Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, Lula then gave the floor to the first lady, Ros\u00e2ngela ‘Janja’ Lula da Silva, the driving force behind the national plan against femicide, one of the great banners of his administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the stage, Janja directed a direct message to the female electorate, considered a crucial pool of votes for the ruling party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among his proposals, Lula announced that he will increase investment in defense, as he wants to be \u201cprepared\u201d so that \u201cno one invades\u201d the country \u201cto take the president away,\u201d in a clear reference to what happened with Nicol\u00e1s Maduro in Venezuela.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On this topic, he also announced that, if he wins at the polls, \u201che will take the issue of rare earths and critical minerals very seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere are many people putting their hands on our lands and that is going to end,\u201d he said, claiming that Brazil must use its own technological capacity to exploit and transform them because they are the \u201cexclusive heritage of the Brazilian people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is estimated that Brazil has the second-largest rare earth reserves in the world -the vast majority unexplored-, behind China, which is also the world leader in refining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI feel like new\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At 80 years old, Lula admitted his frustration at not being able to fight the passage of time, but he did confess that he intends to delay “aging.” For that reason, he revealed that he wakes up every day at five in the morning to exercise, thus responding to the criticisms from Bolsonarism regarding his advanced age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The years go by, the Earth rotates and next year I will be 81,” reflected the head of state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, he assured that he feels “infinitely better than at 57 years old,” when he assumed the Presidency for the first time, in 2003, a vitality that he attributed to his political conviction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
