Gaza.-<\/em><\/strong> The only pediatric hospital operating in the northern Gaza Strip could be forced to close “within hours” due to a lack of electricity, given the Israeli veto on the entry of fuel used by generators, endangering the lives of babies in incubators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We have a very serious and critical problem, and it is not the lack of medicine, medical staff, or equipment. We are talking about something basic: electricity,”<\/em><\/strong> pediatrician Samer Lubad, head of the neonatal intensive care unit at the Patients’ Friends Charitable Hospital in Gaza City, tells EFE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The last time this center received, thanks to the World Health Organization, fuel for the engines that power the generators was two months ago. But the engines need an oil change every 15 days in order to avoid breakdowns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lubad acknowledges that this situation has forced them to discharge babies who were not in critical condition ahead of schedule, in order to save energy and ration the existing supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Palestinian Wafaa Nasr Atia Hajah, a mother of seven, describes to EFE how her daughter\u2014hospitalized for five days\u2014nearly died on Sunday after suffering from bronchitis and being unable to connect her nebulizer during a power outage, which she claims are frequent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to this hospital, Israeli authorities have been blocking the entry of fuel into Gaza for months, an essential good that is part of a much longer list of prohibited items that Israel considers to be of dual use, both civilian and military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the local market, each drum of motor oil can cost more than $1,000, which makes them inaccessible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Palestinian Ahmed Ishhada,<\/strong> the hospital’s administrative manager, explains that one of the generators is out of service due to a lack of lubricant, and says that for the past five days, they have been forced to turn off the generators for about 10 hours a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During those hours, some hospital services, such as the laboratory, radiology, and the admissions and emergency area, stop functioning, and mothers and their companions use their mobile phone flashlights to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
