New Delhi.-<\/em><\/strong> The Pirelli Calendar, one of the most recognizable pieces of fashion photography since the sixties, will dedicate an entire edition to India<\/a> for the first time, the 2027 edition, in a project that seeks to look at the country beyond exoticism and a single perspective, according to a statement from the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The photographs for the 53rd edition, titled ‘India, beyond a single gaze’, were taken between New Delhi and Jaipur by the Norwegian S\u00f8lve Sundsb\u00f8 and the Indian Avani Rai, who continued the project started by her father, the documentarian Raghu Rai, who had begun working on the calendar and passed away in April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

The calendar, known as The Cal, was born in 1964 as an exclusive publication associated for decades with great photographers, models, and celebrities. In recent years, however, it has tried to move away from the image of a luxury erotic calendar to become a more auteur-driven project, attentive to new cultural sensibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In that evolution, the Indian edition functions as a test to represent a visually overexposed country, often reduced outside its borders to clich\u00e9s of color, spirituality, poverty, chaos, or exoticism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“How could the first Pirelli Calendar set in India be shaped by a single gaze?”.<\/em><\/strong> That was what the company asked itself when it began working on this project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The answer was to build an edition with two perspectives, the external gaze of Sundsb\u00f8, a fashion photographer accustomed to staging and visual artifice, and the documentary memory of the Rais, a family linked for decades to the photographic representation of India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Raghu Rai, considered one of the country’s great documentary photographers, had begun the project in the studio. After his death, Avani Rai took part of the work to the streets of Old Delhi, alongside the faces and spaces that her father photographed for a good part of his life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“My father is in my viewfinder, looking at the world with me,” <\/em><\/strong>stated Avani Rai about the creative process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sundsb\u00f8 acknowledged the risk of falling into clich\u00e9s when photographing India, but defended a visual approach marked by color, flowers, intense light, and contrasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The history of India is so immense that it is impossible to summarize it in a single narrative,” he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the protagonists of this edition are actresses, musicians, writers, and models linked to India or its diaspora, such as Aditi Rao Hydari, Avantika Vandanapu, Freida Pinto, Anoushka Shankar, Rupi Kaur, Padma Lakshmi, Lakshmi Menon, and Bhavitha Mandava. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
