Miami.- <\/strong>The U.S. Army<\/a> launched the Western Hemisphere Joint Task Force this Tuesday with the 18 countries that make up its Coalition Against the Cartels of the Americas, which will be a “transition” from Operation Southern Spear, in which it bombed alleged drug trafficking boats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Army’s Southern Command (Southcom), based in Miami, announced in a statement that the alliance seeks to “increase operational effectiveness against threats that undermine regional security and impact the United States” and its allies, in addition to “strengthening” the response to emergencies and humanitarian crises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

General Francis Donovan, commander of Southcom, stated that the new task force will be the “enforcement arm” of the Southern Command “to confront threats throughout the hemisphere.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This headquarters brings together tailored military capabilities and trusted partnerships to increase total systemic friction, operational tempo, exert sustained pressure on criminal organizations, and strengthen the security of the United States and our partners,” stated Donovan.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The commander announced the new task force as a “transition” from Operation Southern Spear, an operation launched in September 2025 by the Donald Trump Administration that involved bombings against alleged drug trafficking boats in Caribbean and Pacific waters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This operation also sought to increase pressure on the deposed Venezuelan ruler, Nicol\u00e1s Maduro, before his arrest in a U.S. intervention in Caracas, from where he was transferred to a detention center in New York in early January to face narcoterrorism charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So far, the U.S. has attacked more than 60 vessels and caused the death of 221 people, according to a count by the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new working group will be made up of the U.S. and the countries that signed the Americas Shield alliance in March in Miami: Argentina, Bolivia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guyana, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay, and Trinidad and Tobago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the event, the Bahamas, Belize, Chile, Guatemala, Jamaica, and Peru have also joined, in addition to the president-elect of Colombia, Abelardo de la Espriella.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The head of Southcom stated that the leader of the new task force will be General Kevin Jarrard, who led the State Department’s response following the June earthquakes in Venezuela.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
