{"id":519610,"date":"2026-08-04T20:44:26","date_gmt":"2026-08-05T00:44:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/deultimominuto.net\/en\/uncategorized\/seven-oas-countries-express-concern-over-electoral-restrictions-in-nicaragua\/"},"modified":"2026-08-04T20:44:26","modified_gmt":"2026-08-05T00:44:26","slug":"seven-oas-countries-express-concern-over-electoral-restrictions-in-nicaragua","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deultimominuto.com\/en\/uncategorized\/seven-oas-countries-express-concern-over-electoral-restrictions-in-nicaragua\/","title":{"rendered":"Seven OAS countries express concern over electoral restrictions in Nicaragua"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Washington.- <\/strong>A group of seven member countries of the Organization of American States (OAS) expressed their &#8220;deep concern&#8221; over the recent statements by the president of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, regarding the suppression of elections in the Central American country and reforms that, they warn, violate human rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The statement, signed by Antigua and Barbuda, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, and Uruguay, reaffirms that representative democracy requires political pluralism, genuine multi-party elections, and full respect for human rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the statement, the signatories affirm that &#8220;elections without genuine political competition cannot constitute a free and democratic expression of the popular will,&#8221; in reference to the announcements by Ortega and the Nicaraguan National Assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The joint statement maintains that this drift calls into question the existence of an authentic electoral process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Furthermore, the text warns that &#8220;such measures undermine the effective exercise of political rights guaranteed by the American Convention on Human Rights&#8221; and are incompatible with the OAS Charter and the Inter-American Democratic Charter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The countries urge the Nicaraguan authorities to respect their international obligations and to guarantee citizen participation under conditions of equality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-rechazo-internacional\">International rejection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pronouncement comes one day before the OAS Permanent Council holds a meeting to analyze the situation in Nicaragua and the convocation of a Meeting of Consultation of Ministers of Foreign Affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nicaragua formally left the OAS in 2023, following the completion of the withdrawal process initiated by the Daniel Ortega government, and therefore currently has no representatives before the organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The session will take place after Ortega, who co-presides over the country along with his wife, Rosario Murillo, declared on July 19 at a rally that in Nicaragua &#8220;there will be no more elections so that they (the opposition) can try to seize the government, seize power through them.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His words were nuanced days later by the president of the National Assembly of Nicaragua, fellow Sandinista Gustavo Porras, who said that there will indeed be elections but after a constitutional reform that allows for the exclusion of &#8220;traitors to the homeland,&#8221; in reference to the opposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ortega&#8217;s statements generated rejection from neighboring countries, such as Costa Rica, Panama, and Guatemala, as well as from United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ortega, an 80-year-old former Sandinista guerrilla, has ruled Nicaragua since 2007 amidst accusations of electoral fraud, political persecution, and the elimination of rivals to avoid electoral competition.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Washington.- A group of seven member countries of the Organization of American States (OAS) expressed their &#8220;deep concern&#8221; over the recent statements by the president of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, regarding the suppression of elections in the Central American country and reforms that, they warn, violate human rights.
