This strengthening was a response to the global search for safe-haven assets, the interest rate differential compared to other economies, and the uncertainty associated with the international inflationary process.

They cite that starting in 2025, however, this trend began to reverse. Various indicators point to the fact that the depreciation of the dollar is a response to changes in U.S. monetary policy, trade policy, and the increase in the issuance of U.S. debt.

“The relationship between trade policy and exchange rates is more complex than some models suggest. In theory, higher trade restrictions could appreciate the currency of the country imposing the tariffs, but recent evidence shows that when affected partners respond with trade retaliation, that effect can be reversed,”

To that, they add that the increase in uncertainty, the perception of commercial deterioration, and the consequent portfolio adjustments generated, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), a real effective depreciation of the dollar of around 4.7% during the 2025-2026 period, which drove appreciations in several currencies.

An analysis published by the Central Bank explains that the depreciation of the US dollar against the Dominican peso, which has been approximately 5.28% since April 2025 and 8% compared to the close of 2025, is due to a simultaneous and sustained expansion of all its main structural sources of foreign currency.
