Guatemala City.-<\/em><\/strong> The activity of the Fuego volcano in Guatemala<\/a>, located about 50 kilometers from the country’s capital, has decreased “progressively” in the last few hours after several days of an intense period of eruptions, the National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology and Meteorology (Insivumeh) reported this Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The scientific entity pointed out in its most recent report that eruptive activity is expected to continue to decrease “gradually in the coming hours” until the colossus returns to normal, although it stressed that there is an imminent threat of lahars due to the passage of a tropical wave that will generate rain in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

For her part, the spokesperson for the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred), Valeria Urizar, said this Wednesday that the alerts in the departments (provinces) of Sacatep\u00e9quez, Escuintla, and Chimaltenango, located in the volcano’s area of influence, remain in effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Urizar assured journalists that some of the nearly 1,700 evacuated people have voluntarily returned to their homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The volcano’s eruption began on August 2nd and left approximately 29,000 people affected in 18 communities living on the slopes of the colossus and its surroundings, who suffered from ash fall in their homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the authorities, nearly 1,700 people were evacuated due to the risks associated with the strong explosions recorded by the volcano, which have not caused any casualties or material damage so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The last significant eruption of the colossus was recorded on March 9, 2025, and the deadliest was on June 3, 2018, with a toll of 202 dead and at least 229 missing, in addition to thousands of dollars in material losses.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
