The awards recognize the excellence of Dominican literary creation and historical research<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Santo Domingo.\u2013\u00a0<\/strong>The Ministry of Culture (MINC) announced this Thursday the winners of the 2026 Annual Literature Awards and the 2025 Jos\u00e9 Gabriel Garc\u00eda Annual History Award for works published during a ceremony held at the ministerial headquarters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event brought together prominent figures from the country’s literary and intellectual spheres, as well as vice ministers, directors general, and officials from the Ministry of Culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his speech, Vice Minister Pastor de Moya highlighted that these awards constitute a reaffirmation of the Dominican State’s commitment to fostering literary creation, historical research, and the strengthening of national identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise, he underscored the value of writing as an instrument for social transformation and highlighted the participation of 128 works in the current call for the Annual Literature Awards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise, the event was attended by Vice Ministers Amaury S\u00e1nchez and Gamal Michel\u00e9n; the General Director of Books and Reading, Aquiles Juli\u00e1n; the Director of Book Fairs, Nan Chevalier; and the Director of the Pedro Henr\u00edquez Ure\u00f1a National Library, Rafael Peralta, among other personalities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event also featured the presence of Fari Rosario, Director of Literary Management and coordinator of the contest, who offered the opening remarks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this edition, the Manuel de Jes\u00fas Galv\u00e1n Annual Novel Award was granted to the work \u201cLa enana\u201d (The Dwarf), by Manuel Garc\u00eda Cartagena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Salom\u00e9 Ure\u00f1a de Henr\u00edquez Annual Poetry Prize was awarded to the book \u201cMorir es verse\u201d by Alberto Eloy Tejera, while the Pedro Henr\u00edquez Ure\u00f1a Annual Essay Prize was granted to the work titled \u201cCulto al cuerpo: las tentaciones entre la salud y la apariencia\u201d by Ysabel Noem\u00ed Tejeda D\u00edaz. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For its part, the Crist\u00f3bal de Llerena Annual Theater Award was granted to \u201cHay una yola en el mundo\u201d (There is a yola in the world), by Ingrid Luciano S\u00e1nchez, while the Aurora Tav\u00e1rez Belliard Annual Children’s and Youth Literature Award distinguished the work \u201cEl mapa de la noche\u201d (The map of the night), by C\u00e9sar S\u00e1nchez Beras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For his part, the Jos\u00e9 Ram\u00f3n L\u00f3pez Annual Short Story Award was granted to \u201cFrom the Side of (Dis)memory\u201d, by Gustavo Olivo Pe\u00f1a.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the activity, the verdict of the 2025 Jos\u00e9 Gabriel Garc\u00eda Annual History Award was also announced, which was awarded to the work \u201cIngenio Barahona: la fundaci\u00f3n del Batey Central y su impacto en el desarrollo de la provincia\u201d (Barahona Sugar Mill: the founding of the Batey Central and its impact on the development of the province), by Carlos Manuel Dilon\u00e9, selected from eight participating works by a jury composed of Herbert Stern, Heriberto Cruz S\u00e1nchez, and Virginia Flores Sasso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Established by Decree No. 3-17, of January 6, 2017, the Jos\u00e9 Gabriel Garc\u00eda Annual History Award aims to recognize original research that contributes significantly to the development of national historiography. The award includes a prize of five hundred thousand pesos, a diploma of recognition, and the publication of the work under the National Publisher’s imprint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For their part, the winners of the different categories of the Annual Literature Awards will receive a prize of three hundred thousand pesos, a diploma of recognition, and the publication of their works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These awards, granted annually by the Ministry of Culture, aim to stimulate Dominican literary production, promote excellence in written creation, and strengthen the national bibliographic heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The evaluation process was carried out by juries composed of renowned writers, researchers, and specialists in each of the categories. In poetry, Jos\u00e9 Enrique Garc\u00eda, No\u00e9 Zayas, and Petra Savi\u00f1\u00f3n participated; in short story, Omar Messon, Ana Almonte, and Luis Ernesto Mej\u00eda; and in novel, Pedro Antonio Valdez, M\u00e1ximo Vega, and Ofelia Berrido.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the essay category, the jury was composed of Carlos Cabrera, Ofelia Berrido, and Sandra Alvarado; in theater, Claudio Rivera, Reynaldo Disla, and Bienvenida Polanco; and in children’s and young adult literature, M\u00f3nica Volonteri, Iv\u00e1n Payano, and Dinorah Coronado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
