La Paz.-<\/strong> Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz<\/a> offered a brief apology this Thursday because he will not be able to attend the inauguration of Colombia’s president-elect, Abelardo de la Espriella, on Friday, and announced that a delegation will attend on behalf of his country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paz announced it in his speech at the honorary session of Parliament for the 201 years of the country’s independence, held at the House of Liberty in Sucre, the constitutional capital of Bolivia and seat of the Judicial Branch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I take this opportunity to greet the president-elect and, apologizing, a Bolivian delegation will be present tomorrow (Friday),” the Bolivian president pointed out, without giving further details about his absence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paz, who will mark nine months in office this August 8th, recalled that he called De la Espriella by phone to congratulate him on his victory in the second round of the presidential election in Colombia and that the “first phrase” the future Colombian leader said to him was “long live Bolivia, damn it.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“And I told him ‘long live Colombia, damn it’. Congratulations, Colombia, congratulations on your decision and your democracy,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Bolivia, a military parade is scheduled for this Friday to mark the 201st anniversary of the creation of the Armed Forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The investiture of Abelardo de la Espriella<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Abelardo de la Espriella will assume the position this Friday in Cali, in southwestern Colombia, for the 2026-2030 term in an atypical ceremony that will be held for the first time outside of Bogot\u00e1 and which will be attended by King Felipe VI of Spain and at least eight Latin American presidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De la Espriella will succeed President Gustavo Petro in the position, who does not recognize his victory and promises to lead the opposition and “civil disobedience” against the far-right lawyer’s government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Government of Bolivia had a tense moment with Petro, who in May stated that Bolivia was experiencing a “popular insurrection” which, in his view, is a “response to geopolitical arrogance,” in reference to the protests and road blockades by sectors demanding the resignation of Paz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bolivia expelled the Colombian ambassador, Elizabeth Garc\u00eda, on May 20th, considering Petro’s statements to be an “interference,” to which Colombia responded by terminating the duties of the official in charge of the Bolivian embassy in Bogot\u00e1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
