La Paz.-<\/strong> A large-scale fire<\/a> occurred this Thursday at the main popular market in the eastern region of Santa Cruz, the most populous and the economic engine of Bolivia, with no casualties reported so far, but with severe structural damage and material losses for the hundreds of merchants who sell there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fire started around 4:00 local time (8:00 GMT) at the Barrio Lindo Fair, in the east of the city of Santa Cruz, where it is estimated that there are at least some 1,800 fixed sales stalls, although the figure varies, since twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, thousands of other street vendors are added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fire reportedly originated in the Acronal block, where clothing and fabrics are mainly sold, but it then spread to other sectors, including the one designated for furniture sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Firefighters’ Response<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Since early this morning, firefighters from the Police, the regional government, and volunteer groups have been at the scene attempting to extinguish the flames, while some merchants managed to rescue some of their merchandise and brought it out to the street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“So far we have not received a report of an injured person, but we are working to control the fire,” the departmental commander of the Santa Cruz Police, David G\u00f3mez, told the media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The police chief explained that the fire is being fought from four lines, although he expressed concern because in some sectors of the market there are some fuels and paint thinners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Unfortunately I couldn’t recover anything, when I arrived at 4 in the morning the fires were going over the roof,” Jos\u00e9 Antonio Quisbert, a merchant affected by the fire, told EFE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aid for affected merchants<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Quisbert requested that the national government help the merchants rebuild the market so they can “continue working,” especially at the end of the year, which is the high season for sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The police set up a security cordon around the perimeter of the fair, which will be supported by the military, as announced by the Minister of Defense, Ernesto Justiniano.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We are going to have a couple of helicopters flying over, helping to fight the fire, and we are also going to deploy military personnel and Military Police to prevent looting in the area, because we already have reports to that effect,” said Justiniano, as quoted in a press release from his ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The minister explained that the helicopters will support the reconnaissance tasks and operations being carried out by emergency teams at the site, and that coordination is being maintained with other state institutions to strengthen the response to the emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The departmental secretary of Citizen Security of Santa Cruz, Jorge Santistevan, told the media that “the fire is contained, but it has not been extinguished” and that “there is an approximate loss of 70% of the infrastructure.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For its part, the Attorney General’s Office announced in a press release that it “initiated an ex officio investigation to establish the causes and circumstances of this unfortunate event.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the ceremony for the country’s 201 years of independence, President Rodrigo Paz<\/a> expressed his solidarity with the merchants of Barrio Lindo and ratified that the Ministry of Defense will support the Santa Cruz Mayor’s Office in the necessary actions to address the emergency.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
