Beijing<\/strong>.- China officially acknowledged the death of two members of its Coast Guard in an operation in the South China Sea on August 11, 2025, the same day a collision occurred between Chinese vessels during an incident with the Philippines near the disputed Scarborough Shoal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The files published in the official registry of martyrs of China identify the deceased as Yi Xinyu, born in 2003, and Cheng Long, born in 2000, both from the eastern province of Shandong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to those records, Yi belonged to the Coast Guard and died on August 11, 2025, during a mission in the South China Sea, while Cheng was part of an office directly subordinate to the same corps and passed away that day during a maritime “rights protection” operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

State television CCTV reported this week that both are among four martyrs awarded posthumously<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The information represents the first known official confirmation of fatalities in that episode, about which Beijing did not report any deaths at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On August 11, 2025, the Philippine Coast Guard accused Chinese vessels of performing “dangerous maneuvers<\/strong>” near Scarborough, known to Beijing as Huangyan and to Manila as Bajo de Masinloc, while they were pursuing a Philippine vessel providing support to fishermen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Philippine version, a Chinese Coast Guard vessel maneuvered at high speed and collided with a People’s Liberation Army (Chinese Army) Navy ship, which caused damage to the Chinese vessel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beijing maintained at the time that several Philippine vessels had entered waters adjacent to Huangyan under the “pretext” of resupplying fishing boats and that its forces expelled them through tracking, blocking, and control operations that it described as “professional, regulated, and legal<\/strong>“.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

China has maintained effective control of Scarborough since 2012 and claims sovereignty over almost the entire South China Sea, in opposition to the claims of the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
