Z\u00fa\u00f1iga, a former diplomat of Cuban-American origin, maintains that, although religious repression has been an official policy since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, the arrival of President Xi Jinping to power in 2012 marked a stage of greater surveillance, censorship, and persecution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It argues that the Chinese Communist Party allows certain religious practices only when their organizations, leaders, and teachings remain subordinate to the official political ideology and the interests of the State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Research indicates that printing, reading, or distributing religious publications can lead to arrests, forced labor, and other forms of abuse by the authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Religions under political control<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the main instruments denounced in the study is the mechanism known as \u201cSinicization,\u201d through which the communist regime seeks to adapt religious beliefs to socialist morality and obedience to the ruling party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, Z\u00fa\u00f1iga maintains that biblical interpretations and passages have been modified to align them with the official discourse and to place loyalty to the State above the Christian faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the case of Catholic parishioners, the Government created the Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association, with the purpose of incorporating priests and believers. Those who choose to participate in clandestine celebrations within their homes may suffer arrests, evictions, and even the demolition of their homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Protestant churches are also under surveillance, as pastors are forced to study the history of the Communist Party, participate in political sessions, and guide parishioners to support the Chinese socialist model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Z\u00fa\u00f1iga asserts that the control of Chinese political power also reaches some Buddhist temples, where the readings and teachings of that religion and philosophy of life have been replaced by the discursive narrative of the ruler Xi Jinping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The investigation describes the situation of Falun Gong practitioners as particularly serious, singled out by the authorities as enemies of the State and exposed to arrests, torture, and harassment, as documented in international reports that include alleged forced organ harvesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Contrast with Taiwan<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The study contrasts that reality with the existing freedoms in Taiwan, whose Constitution guarantees freedom of belief and the equality of citizens, regardless of their religious beliefs or political ideologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Z\u00fa\u00f1iga highlights that Taiwanese religious organizations can manage temples, schools, and training centers without subjecting their doctrines to a state ideology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
