COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) <\/strong>\u2014 Three inmates died and more than 20 were injured in two separate clashes in Sri Lankan prisons on Thursday and Friday, a government minister reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At a third detention center, authorities used tear gas to control inmate protests on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala informed Parliament on Friday that an inmate died Thursday night at the Colombo Magazine Prison, in the capital, Colombo, when about 40 prisoners clashed after escaping from their cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two inmates died on Friday morning at the Kuruwita prison, in the town of Kuruwita, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) from the capital, Wijepala said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Wijepala, between the two incidents, 23 inmates were injured and admitted to hospitals, adding that the violence was related to drug traffickers and rival criminal gangs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was not possible to immediately contact prison officials for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the other hand, on Friday, prison authorities used tear gas to control inmate protests at the Pallansena Correctional Center. No casualties were reported immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The news about the three deaths comes a month after a clash at Negombo prison on July 6 left at least 26 dead, including seven prison officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A large number of inmates are suspects awaiting trial for alleged drug-related offenses. According to Perera, recent laws that tighten bail conditions have led to overcrowding in prisons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
