Austin.- <\/strong>One month after Lorenzo Salgado Araujo died from shots fired by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent, the Latino community of Houston remembered the Mexican worker this Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A caravan passed by the memorial erected on Canal Street, in the historic Mexican neighborhood of Magnolia Park, where flowers, candles, and messages have been accumulating since Salgado, a 52-year-old construction worker, died on July 7th.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tribute comes just one day after Harris County approved allocating $2.5 million over the next three years to an independent investigation by the local district attorney’s office into the actions of federal agents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prosecutor’s office still does not know the identity of the ICE agent<\/a> who shot at Salgado, nor that of the other uniformed officers who participated in the operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Federal agencies have also not turned over all the evidence they possess regarding the case, as denounced this Thursday by the county prosecutor, Sean Teare, who warned that he is even willing to go to court to obtain it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Witnesses contradict the Government<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Government’s official version and the account of the three men who were traveling with Salgado remain in contradiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Salgado rammed an ICE vehicle, disobeyed several orders, and “used his vehicle as a weapon to attempt to run over” an agent, who fired in “self-defense.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The three passengers deny that version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“They didn’t know who was chasing them or what was happening,” Ruby Powers, lawyer for V\u00edctor Salgado, brother of Lorenzo<\/a>, who remains in immigration custody, explained to EFE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to V\u00edctor’s testimony, several vehicles without police identification began following them while the four were heading to a construction site. After stopping, a man approached the side of the truck, shouted “stop!” and fired through an open window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another passenger, Jos\u00e9 Trinidad Rojas, was released after a judge accepted his habeas corpus petition and subsequently assured CNN that Salgado never attempted to run over the officers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rojas further stated that the agents forcibly removed the men from the vehicle and that Salgado, despite being seriously injured, was handcuffed and placed on the ground.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

DHS maintains that the agents involved were not wearing body cameras and authorities have not yet released footage of the shooting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Record number of migrants detained by the Government<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A week after the death, the FBI requested to search the van after noting that it had found bags with a substance it suspected was methamphetamine.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the tests came back negative for drugs, as the prosecutor’s office later confirmed. The family’s lawyers maintain that it was salt that the workers used to prepare a homemade electrolyte drink during their shifts in the Texas heat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Salgado’s death also occurred amidst an intensification of the Donald Trump Administration’s immigration operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than 50,000 people were arrested by immigration authorities in July, the highest monthly figure since the Republican’s return to power<\/a>, as confirmed to EFE by a senior DHS official.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since January 2025, there have also been at least 30 incidents recorded in which ICE agents fired at civilians, with eight deaths<\/a>, according to the specialized media outlet The Trace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Faced with the increase in these incidents, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker T\u00fcrk, called in June for an “independent” investigation into deaths linked to migration operations and criticized the “lack of transparency” of the US authorities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
