Bogot\u00e1.- <\/strong>The new Government of Colombia<\/a> announced this Friday the recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara, hours after the inauguration of far-right president Abelardo de la Espriella, the Foreign Ministry reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The announcement was made during a meeting held by the new Colombian vice president, Jos\u00e9 Manuel Restrepo, and the foreign minister Omar Bula Escobar, with the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Naser Bourita, who participated in Cali in the inauguration ceremony of De la Espriella.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“With this decision, Colombia seeks to revitalize its relationship with Morocco based on a long-term vision and with the conviction that the bilateral rapprochement will fully serve the interests of the Colombian people,” the Foreign Ministry noted on its X account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This announcement represents a 180-degree turn in Colombia’s position regarding Western Sahara, as four years ago, just as the Gustavo Petro administration<\/a> began, it decided to re-establish diplomatic relations with the Sahrawi Republic, which had been frozen since 2001.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“New beginning in the bilateral relationship”<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Since Spain’s withdrawal in 1975, Morocco has controlled approximately 80% of Western Sahara and in 2007 presented an autonomy plan for this territory under Moroccan sovereignty to the UN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Vice President Restrepo,<\/a> Colombia and Morocco are going to “build a new beginning in the bilateral relationship” through a closer political and economic bond, which includes the possibility of negotiating a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and expanding investments from the Maghreb country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For his part, Foreign Minister Bula pointed out that one of the most important decisions of this rapprochement is “the recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty in the south of the country” and added that this Saturday a formal declaration will be made in which Colombia “recognizes the sovereignty of Morocco over the entire Moroccan territory.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Background of the relationship between the two countries<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Also present at today’s announcement were the new Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism of Colombia, Mauricio G\u00f3mez Am\u00edn, and the ambassador of Morocco<\/a> in Bogot\u00e1, Farida Loudaya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For his part, the Moroccan Foreign Minister highlighted his country’s willingness to “turn a new page in the bilateral relationship.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Colombia’s decision to withdraw its recognition of the Sahrawi Democratic Republic and recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara is a historic decision that will give a great boost to the bilateral relationship,” Bourita expressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Colombia and the Sahrawi Republic established diplomatic relations in 1985, during the government of Belisario Betancur, but they were frozen in 2001 during the presidency of Andr\u00e9s Pastrana, until Petro resumed them in August 2022 after meeting in Bogot\u00e1 with the Foreign Minister of the Sahrawi Republic, Mohamed Salem Ould Salek, and with the ambassador representing the Polisario Front for Latin America, Mohamed Zrug.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
