Santo Domingo.\u2013<\/strong> The construction of the Lebanese, Syrian and Palestinian Club <\/a>was marked by years of negotiations, financial contributions, fundraising activities and the joint effort of members of the Arab community who made it possible to turn a project into a reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The story began during a dinner hosted at a residence for Freddy Beras Goico’s birthday, in which prominent members of the Arab community participated, including Juan Jos\u00e9 Attias, El\u00edas Arbaje, Dr. William Janna, Jos\u00e9 Attias, Antonio Alma, Nabi Kouri, and other guests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the meeting, the concern arose to promote the construction of a new club on the Malec\u00f3n grounds, acquired with the resources obtained from the sale of the old Club located on Independencia Avenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The land already belonged to the institution and there were architectural proposals to develop the project. However, despite the intention to carry it out, the lack of financial resources prevented the work from starting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Faced with this situation, efforts began to prepare the plot of land. Miguel Arbaje provided, at no cost to the Club, a tractor to clear and prepare the ground. This action allowed the space to be converted into an area suitable for starting construction and represented one of the first concrete steps toward the realization of the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next challenge was to obtain the financial resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In that context, Mustafa Abu Nabaa proposed organizing a lunch and invited businessman Nashmi Elfituri. At the end of the meeting, Elfituri made a donation of one million pesos, which is remembered as one of the first significant contributions destined directly for the construction. Subsequently, a second contribution of 500 thousand pesos was received, made by a friend of Elfituri.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The resources allowed the work to progress, although the economic needs of a project of that magnitude caused the funds to be depleted quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To avoid the paralysis of the construction, various fundraising activities were organized at a private residence, without these representing any expenses for the Club. In parallel, Dr. William Janna, Juan Jos\u00e9 Attias, Antonio Alma, Julio Hazim, and the undersigned made visits to businessmen and bankers in search of financial support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The efforts made it possible to obtain new donations from people who decided to support the initiative and contribute to the development of a work conceived as heritage for the entire community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When those resources were exhausted again, several members of the board and partners decided to make personal contributions of 100 thousand pesos each to prevent the work from stopping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the economic situation became complicated again and the engineers in charge of the work suspended the tasks and abandoned the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given that scenario, engineer M\u00e1ximo Cambiazo was approached and asked to take over the construction management at no cost to the Club. Cambiazo agreed to collaborate selflessly, which allowed work to resume and kept the project alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even so, it remained pending to find a definitive solution to guarantee the necessary resources to conclude the construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Subsequently, during another lunch held at a private residence, Jos\u00e9 Attias raised the possibility of selling the plot adjacent to the Club and allocating the funds obtained exclusively to the completion of the work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proposal was submitted for consideration to the board of that period and approved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among those interested in acquiring the land were Joaqu\u00edn Geara and Mustaf\u00e1 Abu Nabaa. After evaluating the proposals, the board determined that the offer presented by Abu Nabaa was more favorable and approved the sale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first payment, amounting to 500 thousand pesos, allowed construction work to resume immediately. Subsequently, Abu Nabaa completed the payments corresponding to the land acquisition and made additional contributions in construction materials, including cement, blocks, gravel, and other supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the testimony, the decisions related to the sale of the plot and the development of the project were made with the knowledge and approval of the corresponding board of directors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After years of work, meetings, arrangements, fundraising activities, donations, personal contributions, and voluntary collaboration, the project was successfully completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lebanese, Syrian and Palestinian Club came to represent not only a physical infrastructure, but also the result of the collective commitment of a community that sought to have a space destined to strengthen its bonds, preserve its traditions and transmit its legacy to new generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The testimony also highlights the role of Antonio Alma, who accompanied the project during the eight years dedicated to its construction and management, from its initial efforts to its completion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a special way, Alma is recognized for having proposed the construction of a third floor and the incorporation of a metal structure for the roof, a proposal that contributed to the architectural development of the Club and left a permanent mark on the institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The history of the construction of the Lebanese, Syrian, and Palestinian Club thus stands as a testament to an initiative that required perseverance, solidarity, and the participation of numerous people who contributed resources, labor, efforts, and time to make a project a reality that today is part of the community’s heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
