Sanaa .- <\/strong>At least 14 people<\/a>, including ten civilians, were killed and around 50 others were injured this Sunday in large-scale attacks by Yemen’s Houthi rebels against the port of Mocha, on the Red Sea and controlled by the internationally recognized Yemeni government, various sources reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The National Resistance Forces, affiliated with the Yemeni Executive, denounced in a statement that four soldiers and three civilians were killed in a new wave of insurgent attacks against civilian and military targets in this port city, while 15 more were reported injured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Previously, the state broadcaster YemenTV reported the death of seven civilians and injuries to another 35 in attacks by the insurgents, who are backed by Iran and are carrying out an escalation against government troops that threatens to reactivate the war in Yemen<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to government forces, air defenses have shot down 11 drones launched against Mocha during the day, while the Coast Guard has destroyed an unmanned vessel loaded with explosives that was aimed at the city’s commercial port pier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, they stated that the Houthis launched barrages of missiles at densely populated residential neighborhoods, and that several of these projectiles impacted near vital facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A “systematic war”<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

For his part, the chairman of the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad al-Alimi, accused the Houthis of waging a “systematic war” against the country’s vital economic arteries, statements he made in Riyadh -where he resides-, according to the Yemeni state news agency, Saba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stated that the attack represents “a new escalation directed against one of the most important ports for the Yemeni people,” and urged Washington and the international community to strengthen support for the government of Yemen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He called for a change in international policy: moving from containing the Houthi threat to addressing its “sources and tools,” including its military capabilities and its financing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mocha is a historic port city located within the Taiz Governorate and near the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a strategic maritime point that connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Houthi claim<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Houthi military spokesman, Yahya Sarea, stated in a televised address that their units carried out “a large-scale, high-precision military operation against concentrations of Saudi troops and weapons depots in the Mocha area.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The attack was precise, thank God, and caused widespread destruction of equipment and weaponry, in addition to the death and injury of dozens of people, including Saudis, through the use of numerous ballistic missiles and drones,” he asserted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saudi Arabia has been intervening in the Yemen war since 2015 at the head of a military coalition in support of the Arab country’s government, and the Houthis accuse the country of deploying “mercenaries” on the combat fronts, as well as of the attack against the international airport of Sanaa -the capital controlled by the rebels- in mid-July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since then, the Houthis have carried out an escalation that has included attacks against Saudi Arabia, a country on which they have imposed a maritime blockade in the Red Sea, and against Yemeni government troops, especially in the strategic provinces of Marib and Hadramaut, where dozens of deaths have been recorded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
