Lima<\/strong>.- The Government of Peru, presided over since last July 28 by right-winger Keiko Fujimori, authorized the transfer of 99.7 million soles (about 29.4 million dollars) for the financing of the regional and municipal elections that will be held on October 4 in the country, official sources reported this Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The measure, which was made official through a decree published in the official gazette El Peruano, specified that the National Jury of Elections (JNE), the highest national electoral body, will receive 15.6 million soles (4.6 million dollars) and the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE), the agency in charge of organizing the elections, another 84.1 million soles (24.8 million dollars).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decree remarked that the total amount transferred will be used to finance the expenses associated with the regional and municipal elections, charged to the contingency reserve of the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), in accordance with what is established in the public budget law for 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The regulation was signed by the President of Peru, Keiko Fujimori, and the Minister of Economy and Finance, Elmer Cuba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The budget was granted by the new Fujimori government after Peru’s electoral authorities warned at the beginning of last July that the October elections were at risk due to the lack of funding from the Executive branch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At that moment, the president of the JNE, Roberto Burneo, said that the situation was “very worrying,” because they had been managing the delivery of the necessary resources for the elections for months, but there was still a deficit of 589.52 million soles (173.4 million dollars).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In response, the transitional government presided over by legislator Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Balc\u00e1zar assured that its “main priority<\/strong>” was to guarantee the normal development of the October elections, but remarked that it would continue to provide financial resources for the process “in compliance with the rules of fiscal responsibility and sustainability<\/strong>“.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peruvians have been called to elect on October 4th 25 regional governors and vice-governors, 364 regional councilors, 196 provincial mayors, 1,696 district mayors, 1,724 provincial councilors, and 9,118 district<\/a> councilors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The local elections will close an electoral year in Peru, which began with the general elections last April and continued with a presidential runoff in June, in which Fujimori was elected president for the 2026-2031 term.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
