The Gaza Peace Board<\/strong> asked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu<\/strong> this Monday to reaffirm<\/a> his support for the plan promoted by the United States to move toward the next phase of the ceasefire, and defended the verification mechanisms provided to ensure the disarmament of the terrorist group Hamas.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Netanyahu had stated hours earlier his rejection of the document, considering that there are not sufficient guarantees to certify a “complete” disarmament<\/strong> of the Palestinian Islamist movement before an eventual Israeli military withdrawal from Gaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In statements to Israeli television’s Channel 12<\/em>, the director general of the Peace Board, Bulgarian diplomat Nickolay Mladenov<\/strong>, urged the Israeli head of government to trust the proposed scheme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>\u201cNo one is obligated to do anything, much less Israel, before we have verified measures on the ground<\/strong>,\u201d stated Mladenov.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The diplomat further maintained that the plan only contemplates that Israeli troops do not advance beyond the so-called \u201cYellow Line<\/strong>,\u201d which delimits their current positions in the Strip, and stressed that the initiative does not prevent Israel from responding if it deems it necessary to defend itself against Hamas attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Nickolay Mladenov defended the plan’s verification mechanisms and stated that Israel should not act before there are proven measures on the ground. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The terrorist group, for its part, reacted to Netanyahu’s rejection with general support for the plan’s main outlines, although it demanded a concrete timetable for the Israeli withdrawal and the total cessation of military operations in the enclave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hamas further accused Israel of continuing attacks on Gaza<\/strong>, where, according to the text, more than 1,200 people have died since the ceasefire declaration in October of last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

US sources also cited by Channel 12<\/em> downplayed Netanyahu’s statements and interpreted them as a gesture aimed at Israeli public opinion ahead of the elections scheduled for October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe understand your political needs. We have no problem with that, as long as you keep doing what we ask, especially regarding curbing the attacks in Gaza<\/strong>,\u201d the sources noted, on condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United States has warned Israel on several occasions that it will not accept a resumption of a large-scale military offensive in Gaza, although it has maintained a more flexible position regarding the continuation of daily, lower-intensity attacks in the enclave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 15-point plan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Netanyahu rejected the document, arguing that there are insufficient guarantees to verify the complete disarmament of Hamas before an Israeli military withdrawal from Gaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Netanyahu rejected this Sunday the 15-point plan announced on July 30 by the President of the United States, Donald Trump<\/strong>, and published by the Peace Board to channel the second phase of the ceasefire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIsrael rejects the 15-point document. The Israel Defense Forces will not withdraw until Hamas is disarmed<\/strong>\u201d, the prime minister stated in a video message released by his office at the start of a cabinet meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Israeli head of government insisted that disarmament must be total and also maintained that some proposals from his American allies are \u201cunacceptable\u201d to Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the presentation of the plan, a White House official warned that Trump would be \u201cvery, very disappointed\u201d if Israel did not fulfill its part of the agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 15-point roadmap seeks to revive the initial 20-point plan and contemplates, among other aspects, the cessation of Israeli military operations in Gaza and the withdrawal of troops to the original line of the so-called \u201cYellow Line\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
