The former commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, Mohsen Rezai, was appointed this Sunday to head the Supreme Security Council, the main body responsible for coordinating the country’s defense and security policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rezai, 71, will serve as secretary-general of the body and representative of the Iranian supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, becoming one of the main links between the Armed Forces, the Government, and the religious establishment that leads the Islamic Republic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The new Iranian security chief has an extensive political and military background. In addition to commanding the Revolutionary Guard for years, he served as Vice President for Economic Affairs and as secretary of the Expediency Council, the body responsible for mediating disputes between Parliament and the Guardian Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This latter body possesses broad powers within the Iranian political system, among them the oversight of presidential candidacies and those aspiring to join the Assembly of Experts, the institution in charge of electing the supreme leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Khamenei justified Rezai’s appointment due to his \u201cvaluable experience.\u201d The designation also has the backing of Iranian President Masud Pezeshkian and other relevant figures in political power, including Parliament Speaker and Iranian negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rezai replaces Mohamed Baqer Zolghadr in the position, who will go on to serve as a political advisor to the supreme leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Zolghadr had assumed leadership of the Supreme National Security Council after the death of Ali Larijani, former nuclear negotiator and former speaker of Parliament, who passed away during an Israeli attack in the context of the United States and Israel’s offensive against Iran recorded at the beginning of this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
