Cali.-<\/strong> Colombian authorities imposed a curfew and reinforced security in Cali with military personnel after the 7.4<\/strong> magnitude earthquake that shook western Colombia<\/a>, leaving fatalities, destroyed buildings, and people trapped in the rubble in several cities across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The seismic movement occurred at 7:34 in the morning on Monday, August 10<\/strong> and had its epicenter in San Jos\u00e9 del Palmar, Choc\u00f3 department<\/strong>, with a depth of 103 kilometers, according to the update from the Colombian Geological Service (SGC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The institution described the phenomenon as the highest magnitude earthquake recorded in Colombia during the 21st century<\/strong>. Hours after the main event, at least 18 aftershocks had been recorded, and specialists warned that they could continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cali is among the hardest-hit cities. Faced with the damage and reports of possible looting in affected sectors, Mayor Alejandro Eder<\/strong> decreed a curfew from 8:00 p.m. Monday until 6:00 a.m. Tuesday<\/strong>, while emergency agencies continued searching for survivors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The measure includes exceptions for members of the Public Force, healthcare personnel, relief agencies, essential service workers, journalists, officials linked to emergency response, and citizens who need to travel for medical reasons, among other authorized groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local authorities also ordered the militarization of affected sectors<\/strong>, declared a public calamity, and activated a red alert in Cali’s hospital network to expand response capacity in light of the number of injured people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Abelardo de la Espriella<\/strong> traveled to the capital of Valle del Cauca accompanied by members of his cabinet to coordinate rescue, security, and assistance efforts for those affected with municipal authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The president’s arrival comes just days after taking office, making the earthquake the first major national emergency of his administration<\/strong>. De la Espriella declared a state of emergency to expedite the mobilization of resources destined for the regions hit by the disaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The impact of the earthquake extended far beyond Cali. Pereira, Manizales, Armenia, Quibd\u00f3, and other locations in western Colombia reported damage, while dozens of structures collapsed and authorities began assessing hundreds of affected buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The national toll continued to rise this Tuesday. Reports available during the early hours placed the number of dead at at least 132 and 570 injured<\/strong>, although the figures remained subject to update due to search operations and difficulties in obtaining information from some of the affected areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Cali, rescue teams worked throughout the night among collapsed structures in the hope of locating people alive. The mobility restriction seeks precisely to keep roads clear to facilitate the transit of ambulances, firefighters, rescuers, and heavy machinery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Government also announced the deployment of more than 1,000 troops to reinforce security in Cali<\/strong>, following reports of looting threats amid the emergency. Surveillance is focused especially on the sectors with the most damage and in vulnerable commercial areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The earthquake originated in a region characterized by intense tectonic activity. The Colombian Geological Service explained that in the Colombian Pacific, the Nazca plate is subducting beneath the South American plate<\/strong>, a process known as subduction and capable of releasing large amounts of energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the epicenter was located in Choc\u00f3, the high magnitude allowed the movement to be widely felt throughout Colombian territory and caused significant damage hundreds of kilometers from the point where it originated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With rescue operations still active and the death toll evolving, Cali remains under extraordinary security measures as Colombia attempts to gauge the consequences of its most powerful earthquake so far this century<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
