Santo Domingo.<\/strong>\u2014 The Dominican Association of Teachers (ADP) warned that around 153 thousand three-year-old children<\/strong> could be left out of classrooms at the start of the 2026-2027 school year due to the deficit of spaces in the country’s educational centers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The president of the ADP, Eduardo Hidalgo<\/strong>, explained that the number of children who would not have a spot represents the need for some 7,000 additional classrooms<\/strong> to meet the demand for the preschool level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his participation in the List\u00edn Diario Breakfast<\/strong>, Hidalgo outlined the main difficulties that, according to the teachers’ union, the Dominican educational system faces ahead of the start of the next school year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The union leader also pointed out that in other educational levels, more than 321 thousand students<\/strong> could be left without a spot due to the lack of physical space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overcrowding in classrooms<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Faced with a shortage of classrooms, some educational centers have been forced to increase the number of students per room. Hidalgo indicated that schools with the capacity to serve about 20 preschool-level students end up receiving up to 35 children per classroom<\/strong>, with the goal of preventing a larger number from being left out of the educational system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the municipalities affected by student overcrowding, the president of the ADP cited Hig\u00fcey<\/strong>, where he assured that one of the most critical situations exists due to the insufficiency of classrooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hidalgo explained that student enrollment increases every year, while the construction of new schools does not keep pace with the demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis government has probably delivered 100. Let’s say 200 schools, but those are not enough for the number of boys, girls, and adolescents who need new classrooms,\u201d<\/strong> he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ADP calls for reducing the number of students per classroom<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

For his part, the ADP Secretary of Research and Statistics, \u00c1ngel Cuello<\/strong>, maintained that to guarantee a more personalized education and adequately respond to the needs of students, classrooms should have around 20 students<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cuello cited the Montessori model as a reference, as well as the number of students that some private schools typically manage to facilitate more individualized attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Montessori system implies 20 students, which is what private schools use, because there is personalized attention to see what they are working on, checking the notebook,\u201d he\/she stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Warning issued regarding lack of water in schools<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the classroom deficit, the ADP questioned the infrastructure and maintenance conditions of numerous educational centers in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the \u201c2026-2027 School Year Completion Conditions\u201d<\/strong> report, cited by the union, around 45% of schools nationwide report at least five days without water<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cuello described access to water as an essential element for the operation of the schools, due to the hygiene and cleaning needs of the students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWater in an educational center is vital, given the permanent need of children regarding cleanliness and sanitization,\u201d he pointed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
