Four people died and one woman was injured after gunmen opened fire<\/a> on those who were in a home in the west of the city of Esmeraldas<\/strong>. The attack occurred on the night of Sunday, August 9, 2026, and, as of this August 11, authorities have not reported any arrests for the crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>The shooting took place in the Nuevos Horizontes<\/strong> sector, in the Santa Rosa<\/strong> neighborhood, known as Los Come Nupa. Around 10:01 PM, the ECU 911 system received an alert regarding several people wounded by gunfire, which prompted the deployment of police units to the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Upon arrival, the uniformed officers found a scene with victims both inside and outside the home. The body of a man remained in the yard, while a 16-year-old teenager who had also passed away was located in the living room. Three other people struck by the gunfire had already been taken to health facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Two of those injured died due to the severity of their injuries. The attack thus left four fatalities and one survivor<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three of the deceased were identified as Sim\u00f3n M\u00e1rquez Bautista<\/strong>, about 65 years old; Jonathan Agust\u00edn Jama Jama<\/strong>, 39; and G\u00e9nesis Andrea<\/strong>, 16. Available reports present discrepancies regarding the full identity of the fourth victim, a young man of approximately 20 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>M\u00e1rquez Bautista was taken to the Las Palmas Type C health center after being shot in the head. Doctors confirmed his death. Jama Jama suffered a projectile wound in the lower abdomen region and also did not survive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The only person who remained alive after the attack is a woman whose identity has not been released. She was taken to the Ecuadorian Social Security Institute (IESS)<\/strong> hospital with gunshot wounds to her thighs. Initial medical information indicated that the projectiles had not affected vital organs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first versions collected during the proceedings made it possible to establish a possible sequence of the attack. Witnesses indicated that three men dressed in dark clothing arrived in the area on a black motorcycle. The suspects approached the property where the victims were located, fired several shots, and subsequently escaped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The identity of the attackers remains under investigation. It has also not been publicly established whether one of the people gathered in the home was the specific target of the armed raid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the crime, specialized agents cordoned off the property to carry out forensic examinations and collect available evidence. Police and military personnel also carried out operations in Los Come Nupa on Monday, August 10, while proceedings continued to locate those responsible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of this Tuesday, August 11, the Police had not publicly announced the capture of any suspects directly related to the multiple murder. Authorities have also not officially identified a criminal organization as responsible, nor have they reported a defined motive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The attack took place in a province that maintains high indicators of violence. Esmeraldas recorded 364 intentional homicides during 2025, according to official figures released on the evolution of violent deaths in Ecuador. In 2024, 298 cases had been recorded, so the following year ended with 66 additional homicides. With those records, Esmeraldas was the fifth province in the country with the highest number of intentional homicides in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The province is located on the northern border of Ecuador with Colombia<\/strong> and has access to the Pacific Ocean. These geographical characteristics also place it in corridors used for illicit activities, particularly drug and arms trafficking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police and military authorities have previously indicated that some of the murders recorded in Esmeraldas are due to clashes and territorial disputes between criminal organizations. However, as of this August 11, there is no official statement establishing that this is the cause of the attack in Los Come Nupa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Investigations are ongoing to determine who ordered and carried out the shooting, establish their motivation, and clarify whether the attack was directed at any of the victims.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
