SANTO DOMINGO.<\/strong> \u2014 The National Institute of Transplant Coordination (INCORT) commemorated its 28th anniversary<\/strong> with an event in which health sector authorities, medical professionals, transplant coordinators, and special guests highlighted the progress achieved in the country and reaffirmed the need to strengthen the culture of organ, tissue, and cell donation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The activity, held under the slogan \u201c28 years sowing hope, because life flourishes when you decide to donate,\u201d was led by the Minister of Public Health, V\u00edctor Atallah, who highlighted that the true meaning of donation and transplantation is found in the lives that have been able to continue thanks to the solidarity of those who decide to donate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Atallah recognized the work of the medical teams and other professionals involved in these procedures and urged the population to understand donation as an opportunity to save lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMore than the years, it is the entire history of new lives, of people who kept walking thanks to many people who decided to make the donation,\u201d expressed the minister, who also revealed that he is registered as a donor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the activity, the director of INCORT, Jos\u00e9 Juan Castillos Almonte<\/strong>, highlighted that the development of transplantation in the Dominican Republic has been the result of the work of multiple professionals from different generations and areas of specialization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the main milestones, he mentioned the first corneal transplants in the late 1960s<\/strong>, as well as the first successful kidney transplant, performed on December 23, 1986<\/strong>, at the Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Cabral y B\u00e1ez Hospital in Santiago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also highlighted the creation, in 1987<\/strong>, of the first kidney transplant program at the Salvador B. Gautier Hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Castillos Almonte also highlighted the importance of Law 329-98<\/strong>, enacted in 1998, through which INCORT was created and the foundations were established for the organization and coordination of the National Donation and Transplant System.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

INCORT poses challenges to expand transplants<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When referring to the challenges facing the country, the director of INCORT pointed out the need to recover heart transplantation<\/strong> and develop lung and intestine transplant programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise, he raised the importance of guaranteeing the availability of corneas and preventing pediatric patients from having to travel abroad to receive liver transplants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another of the challenges pointed out is to achieve greater coverage of transplants by social security<\/strong>, in addition to strengthening hospital coordination and promoting donation as a daily act of solidarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Castillos Almonte maintained that the institution’s 28 years should serve not only to celebrate the achievements reached, but also to renew the commitment to the future of transplantation in the Dominican Republic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Documentary on the history of transplantation presented<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As part of the commemoration, the documentary \u201cLegacy of Life: The faces of transplantation. The story of those who made transplantation possible in the Dom. Rep.\u201d<\/strong> was presented, a production that gathers the main events, protagonists, and advances that have marked the development of organ transplants in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the ceremony, doctors Fernando Morales<\/strong> and Jos\u00e9 del Carmen Caraballo<\/strong> were also recognized for their contributions to the strengthening of organ donation and transplantation in the Dominican Republic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout its 28 years, INCORT has promoted education, coordination, and awareness actions aimed at strengthening public trust and promoting a greater culture of donation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
