Santo Domingo.- <\/strong>A scientific investigation developed in the Dominican Republic<\/a> focuses on a possible connection between the gut and the brain, specifically in its relationship with Alzheimer’s disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The study is led by Mart\u00edn Medrano, a researcher at the Pontificia Universidad Cat\u00f3lica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM), who has a research background linked to neurodegenerative diseases and aging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project analyzes the gut microbiota, that is, the set of microorganisms that inhabit the digestive system, and seeks to determine what relationship could exist between its composition and the processes associated with Alzheimer’s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the PUCMM, the research contemplates the analysis of the microbiota in people with familial Alzheimer’s, as well as its possible relationship with genes linked to the disease. It also evaluates the influence of probiotics on cognitive functions and the gut microbiota in people who do not present dementia, but who may have genetic risk factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This approach stems from a growing line of scientific research that studies the communication between the gut and the brain and how certain changes in the organism could be related to cognitive processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For researchers, better understanding this relationship could provide new clues about the mechanisms associated with memory decline and brain aging, although these studies do not mean that there is a proven direct cause between the microbiota and Alzheimer’s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PUCMM maintains among its lines of research the study of genetics and Alzheimer’s disease, as well as projects aimed at identifying potential biomarkers related to this condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The work also represents a contribution to the scientific research being developed in the country and strengthens the participation of Dominican institutions in studies related to aging and neurodegenerative diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Research on the microbiota and Alzheimer’s is part of the scientific projects developed by PUCMM and has been funded by FONDOCYT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
