Santo Domingo.-<\/strong> The executive vice president of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM),<\/a> Deligne Ascenci\u00f3n, downplayed the electoral projections that seek to anticipate the results of the 2028 elections this early and assured that the current positioning of the parties does not allow for determining whether there will be a first or second round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAny measurement, I don’t know the basis on which Tony was referring, but what I have read about him saying that with these numbers there will be a first or second round, that makes no sense and has no political objectivity,\u201d stated Ascenci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statement responds to the points raised by ruling party leader Tony Pe\u00f1a Guaba, who recently questioned the level of support the PRM currently has and warned about the difficulties the organization would face in securing a victory in the first round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ascenci\u00f3n maintained during an interview on the radio program \u201cEsto No Tiene Nombre\u201d that the PRM is currently moving, according to the measurements he has observed, between 38% and 42%, but warned that this percentage cannot be used as a definitive snapshot of what will happen in two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is going to vary. We are talking about the fact that any measurement (…) makes no sense and has no political objectivity,\u201d insisted the leader, considering it premature to draw conclusions about the 2028 electoral scenario.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The leader also differentiated between a party’s level of sympathy and the support its presidential candidate can achieve. As an example, he cited the 2024 elections, when, as he explained, the PRM obtained around 47% or 48% as an organization, while President Luis Abinader reached nearly 57% of the votes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe contribution between the party and the candidate is what defines an electoral process,\u201d maintained Ascenci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

In his view, the candidacies have the capacity to expand the electoral support of political organizations, which is why he considers it still too early to determine which party will be in a position to win in the first round in 2028.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ascenci\u00f3n also pointed out that the PRM will not necessarily maintain the percentage currently reflected in the polls and stated that the opposition parties will not remain static at their current levels either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNeither will the People’s Force stay at 16 or 17%, nor will the PRM stay at 37-38 or 40%,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

With this, the ruling party leader attempts to place the electoral debate in a longer-term perspective, a little less than two years before the parties must define their candidacies. In the case of the PRM, the primaries to choose their candidates for 2028 are scheduled for October 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
