The Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) presented the country with 1,058 new postgraduate professionals, within the framework of the academy’s commemorative activities for the 163rd anniversary of the Restoration and, at the same time, with a special dedication to the memory of the fatal victims of the earthquakes recorded in Colombia and Venezuela.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the first graduation ceremony led by the rector of the UASD, Dr. Jorge Asjana David, who, less than a month after his inauguration, delivered to the country such an important number of specialists in different areas of scientific knowledge, thus strengthening the commitment of the Primada de Am\u00e9rica as an institution that has made public higher education an instrument of social mobility, while democratizing knowledge and building citizenship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asjana David urged the new professionals to become true standard-bearers of Dominican identity in their respective scientific fields, just as the heroes of the Restoration were in their own roles, such as Gregorio Luper\u00f3n, Gaspar Polanco, Santiago Rodr\u00edguez, Socorro S\u00e1nchez, Benito Monci\u00f3n, Benigno Filomeno de Rojas, Canela Mota, and \u00c1gueda Rodr\u00edguez, who knew how to take up arms for the sake of freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The same Republic that 163 years ago was restored by men and women aware that freedom demanded sacrifice, courage, and confidence in the future, places its trust in you today. It does not ask you to take up weapons of war. It asks you to take up the tools of sustainable development and peace; to expand the frontiers of knowledge, science, innovation, culture, and hope,” added the rector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Solidarity with Colombia and Venezuela<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The highest UASD authority also took the opportunity to send a message of solidarity to the Republic of Colombia, a South American country recently affected by a 7.4 magnitude earthquake that has left dozens of people dead and hundreds injured, in addition to material damage. The rector also extended his message to Venezuela, a nation that also suffered a telluric tragedy on June 24th.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“In times like these, solidarity between peoples acquires its deepest meaning: it reminds us that, in the face of vulnerability and pain, humanity must recognize itself as a single community and that knowledge, science, and cooperation also have the duty to put themselves at the service of life and reconstruction,” expressed Asjana David.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ceremony was also attended by the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Dr. Rafael Santos Bad\u00eda, as well as the vice-rectors Rosel Fern\u00e1ndez, Academic; Antonio Ciriaco, Administrative; Gerardo Roa, Extension; and Juana Encarnaci\u00f3n, Research and Postgraduate Studies, who also dedicated an emotional congratulatory message to the graduates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I extend my congratulations to the 1058 graduates, and at the same time, I tell you that you are an important tool to transform realities, question the status quo, seek solutions, and contribute to the construction of a fairer, more humane society that is better prepared to face the challenges of the present and the future of the Dominican Republic,” expressed Vice-Rector Encarnaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New professionals by faculty<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The highest number of graduates by faculty corresponds to Health Sciences, with 528; followed by Economic and Social Sciences, with 143; Education Sciences, 127; Legal and Political Sciences, 100; Humanities, 78; Sciences, 62; Engineering and Architecture, 17, while Arts, with three, completes the important group of fourth-level professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The highest academic index of the new group of professionals was achieved by Wilton Andr\u00e9s P\u00e9rez de los Santos, from the Master’s Degree in Tax Law and Tax Procedural Law, of the Faculty of Legal and Political Sciences, who gave the words of thanks on behalf of his classmates, and who reached the highest index with 98.3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The investiture was officiated in the Great Hall of the state academy, thus resuming the culture and commitment of granting a greater degree of solemnity to such an important ceremony held at the state academy, while several indoor screens were set up so that the graduates’ families could witness the investiture with the due dignity they deserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those invested in the different disciplines of knowledge received their respective degrees, as well as the doctorates in Mathematics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
