Santo Domingo.<\/strong>\u2014 A few days before the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM)<\/strong> completes six years at the helm of the Government, its president and Minister of the Presidency, Jos\u00e9 Ignacio Paliza,<\/strong> defended the administration led by Luis Abinader and stated that the Dominican Republic is in better condition today than it was before 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his participation in the List\u00edn Diario<\/a><\/em>,<\/strong> breakfast meeting, Paliza maintained that the Government has achieved progress in different areas, despite criticism from opposition parties and other sectors of society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cToday we have a better Dominican Republic than six years ago,\u201d stated the official, who considered that the current administration has responded to various needs of the population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More energy, but difficulties persist<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the points addressed by Paliza was the electrical system. The ruling party leader assured that Dominicans currently receive more energy than ever and maintained that the 24-hour circuits are being maintained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, he acknowledged that the Government still faces difficulties in guaranteeing a permanent electrical service with prices that satisfy users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe country’s neighborhoods are a 24-hour system,\u201d<\/strong> Paliza asserted, while admitting that the population demands a continuous supply and better rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The minister pointed out that the country has made considerable progress in terms of electricity generation, but warned that the growth in demand, estimated at between 100 and 150 megawatts per year, makes it necessary to continue expanding installed capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his view, the main weaknesses of the sector are currently concentrated in the distribution and commercialization of electricity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Government highlights thousands of public works<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Paliza also highlighted the infrastructure works executed during the Abinader administration. As he explained, the Government has facilitated the completion of some 3,000 public buildings<\/strong>, while others remain in the process of completion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, he considered that some of the main achievements of the current administration cannot necessarily be measured by the number of works built.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among them, he mentioned the 2024 constitutional reform<\/strong>, which established term limits for the same person in the Presidency of the Republic and, according to Paliza, contributes to guaranteeing the alternation of power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also highlighted the strengthening of constitutional bodies and the independence between political power and State institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lower poverty and more formal jobs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Regarding social matters, the president of the PRM assured that the country has experienced a significant reduction in poverty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the figures cited by the official, poverty closed last year at around 17%<\/strong>, compared to the 30% recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paliza linked this reduction to the social and economic policies implemented by the Government, in addition to highlighting the certification of the Dominican Republic by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in relation to undernourishment levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The official also highlighted the expansion of the Economic Kitchens. He indicated that when the PRM came to power there were around 30 establishments, while currently 163<\/strong> are operating, with a distribution of nearly 200,000 food rations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the labor market, Paliza stated that the country is recording one of the highest levels of formal employment in its history, although he acknowledged that informality continues to be a challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise, he highlighted salary increases in sectors such as tourism and free trade zones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Education, one of the pending issues<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Despite the advances listed, Paliza acknowledged that the Government is not satisfied with the results achieved in two areas: public education and electricity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the educational field, he maintained that the challenge consists not only of improving student training, but also of preparing young people in the technical and professional areas demanded by the national productive market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe need not only to train our young people and our population well, but also to train them in a specialized way,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The approach aims for a greater connection between the educational system and the needs of industries and the different regions of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Six years of management and new challenges<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With the sixth anniversary of the PRM’s arrival in government, the ruling party leadership defends an administration marked by post-pandemic economic recovery, poverty reduction, job growth, and the execution of public works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the Minister of the Presidency himself acknowledges that significant challenges persist, especially in education and in the distribution and commercialization of electrical energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paliza maintains that the overall balance is positive and that the country is in a better position than in 2020. For the Government, the challenge of the coming years will be to convert those advances into sustainable improvements in public services and to respond to the expectations of a population that, according to the official himself, no longer compares the present only with the past, but demands increasingly greater results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
