SANTO DOMINGO.-<\/strong>\u00a0At the request of the Public Prosecutor’s Office,<\/strong> a court sentenced a man to 20 years in prison after finding him guilty of raping a teenager in the Santiago Rodr\u00edguez province.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dionis de Jes\u00fas Saint-Hilaire G\u00f3mez<\/strong> <\/a>was sentenced after the Public Prosecutor’s Office proved that he committed crimes of sexual assault, sexual, physical, and psychological abuse, as well as human trafficking against a minor, who was 14 years old at the time of the events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The accusatory file states that the victim was repeatedly subjected to sexual and psychological assaults by the defendant, who also exposed her to conditions of vulnerability and exploitation, behaviors that constitute serious violations of the fundamental rights of children and adolescents. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe sentence is the result of a judicial process supported by an exhaustive investigation led by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, whose proceedings formally began in February 2024, after the authorities of Santiago de los Caballeros rescued the minor and proceeded with the initial investigations of the case,\u201d said the chief prosecutor of Santiago Rodriguez, Sumaya Rodriguez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\/She recalled that, after being rescued, the young woman received the necessary protection. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The litigation of the case was led by public prosecutor Rafael Bueno, who presented to the court a set of testimonial, documentary, expert, and material evidence that allowed for the criminal responsibility of the convicted person to be proven beyond any reasonable doubt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The process was presented by the Public Prosecutor’s Office through a formal indictment filed on June 27, 2024, and subsequently, the Instruction Court of the Judicial District of Santiago Rodr\u00edguez, through Penal Resolution no. 612-2025-SAAJ-00036, ordered the opening of a trial upon determining that there was sufficient evidentiary material to support a probability of conviction against the defendant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In said judicial decision, the court established that the evidence provided by the Public Prosecutor’s Office was legal, useful, pertinent, and relevant to prove the charged facts, as well as the direct link of the accused to the crimes of sexual assault, child abuse, and human trafficking committed against the minor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the evidence incorporated into the proceedings by the Public Prosecutor’s Office are forensic medical evaluations, specialized psychological reports, and the testimony provided by the victim through a Gesell Chamber interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The convicted person must serve the 20 years of deprivation of liberty in the Santiago Rodr\u00edguez public jail by order of judges Katia Nebot, Dayanara Peralta, and Risel Pe\u00f1a Morel, of the Collegiate Tribunal of the Criminal Chamber of the Court of First Instance of the Judicial District of that province, who declared him guilty of violating several articles of the Penal Code and article 396 of Law 136-03.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cases of sexual violence against children and adolescents<\/strong> are considered serious crimes within the Dominican legal system and can lead to imprisonment<\/strong> when courts determine the criminal liability of the accused. National legislation establishes special protection mechanisms for minors due to their vulnerable status, in addition to providing for sanctions that may include imprisonment<\/strong> for those found guilty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the Dominican Republic, the Code for the System of Protection and Fundamental Rights of Children and Adolescents (Law 136-03)<\/strong> establishes rights and guarantees intended to protect minors against abuse, exploitation, violence, and other forms of violation. Depending on the severity of the acts and the applicable legal provisions, those responsible may face imprisonment<\/strong> and other consequences established by legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Judicial processes involving minors who are victims of sexual crimes also require specialized treatment. One of the tools used by the Dominican justice system is the Gesell Chamber interview<\/strong>, a mechanism that allows for obtaining the victim’s testimony in a specialized environment and seeks to reduce the possibility of the minor having to unnecessarily repeat their account during the different stages of the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The use of these mechanisms seeks to ensure that the investigation can be carried out while respecting the rights of the victim, while the accused faces due process and, if found guilty, the corresponding sanctions, including prison<\/strong> when established by the sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the most serious cases, a prison<\/strong> sentence represents the fulfillment of the penalty imposed by the court after evaluating the evidence presented during the judicial process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
