The date marks the beginning of the Restoration War, on August 16, 1863, when a group of patriots led the historic Grito de Capotillo, beginning the struggle that would return the country’s sovereignty after the annexation to Spain in 1861.

The Restoration War arose as a response to the decision of the then-president Pedro Santana to annex the Dominican Republic to the Spanish Empire on March 18, 1861. The measure caused deep discontent among broad sectors of the population, who considered the annexation a betrayal of the ideals of independence conquered in 1844 under the leadership of Juan Pablo Duarte and the Trinitarios.

The restoration movement began when a group of fourteen patriots, led by Santiago Rodríguez, raised the Dominican flag on Cerro de Capotillo, in the current province of Dajabón. This group was joined by figures such as Benito Monción, Pedro Antonio Pimentel, Gaspar Polanco, José Antonio Salcedo, Gregorio Luperón, Benigno Filomeno de Rojas, Máximo Grullón and other fighters who organized the resistance in different regions of the country.

For nearly two years, the restorationists waged intense clashes against Spanish troops, employing guerrilla tactics and leveraging their knowledge of the terrain to weaken the colonial army. The resistance spread rapidly throughout the Cibao and other provinces, becoming a national movement that united thousands of Dominicans in defense of sovereignty.

The war concluded in 1865, when the Spanish Crown decided to abandon the Dominican territory and annulled the annexation decree, once again recognizing the country’s independence. This triumph marked the birth of the so-called Second Republic, definitively consolidating the status of the Dominican Republic as a free, independent, and sovereign nation.

We recommend reading:August 13th Anniversaries

August 16th is a date of profound patriotic significance.
