MADISON, Wisconsin\u2014<\/strong> Bill DeLind believed the Picasso print stolen from his gallery in Milwaukee<\/a> in 2018 was lost forever. But last week, the police called him and asked him to look at a piece of art that a local landlord found while cleaning out an empty apartment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DeLind immediately recognized the stolen “Torero” etching, one of only 30 known to exist that were signed by Picasso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI felt overwhelmed,\u201d DeLind said on Friday. \u201cI was speechless. It was a very emotional moment for me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The DeLind Fine Art Appraisals sticker was still on the back of the framed print, just as they had placed it there in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIndeed, it was mine\u201d, said DeLind. \u201cEverything returned to its origin\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tim Dertz, a property owner in Milwaukee, told WISN-TV that he found the fingerprint while cleaning the apartment of a person who had been evicted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was in a somewhat strange place, hanging on the wall,\u201d Tim Dertz told the station. \u201cIt looked like it had been there for a very long time because it had a lot of dust on it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dertz said he showed it to an antique dealer friend, who recognized it as a Picasso and said it appeared to be the same one that DeLind had reported stolen in 2018. Dertz turned it over to the police, who subsequently contacted DeLind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>The Milwaukee Police Department reported via email on Friday that the statute of limitations for theft and property crimes is typically six years, but the case remains under investigation. Caroline Clancy, an FBI spokesperson in Milwaukee, declined to comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to DeLind, the year it was stolen, the piece was valued between $35,000 and $50,000. He estimates that its value has not changed much since then, but now, given its history, it could be worth close to $50,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The artwork remains in the possession of the Milwaukee police while the client who commissioned it for sale through his art gallery resolves the matter with his insurance company, DeLind said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DeLind stated that his former business partner, who passed away in February, was deeply affected by the 2018 theft and would call the police every year on the anniversary of the crime, asking them to publicize it again in the hope that the Picasso could be found.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
