Bogota, Aug 15 (EFE).- Tons of humanitarian aid began arriving this Saturday in some of the most remote areas affected by the earthquake that struck Colombia <\/a>last Monday, while rescue teams continue the search for the missing and the country begins to face a reconstruction that promises to be long and complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least three tractor-trailers, with a capacity to transport about 35 tons each, and several trucks loaded with food, water, medicine, mattresses, and hygiene products traveled to Buenaventura, Pereira, and various municipalities in the Choc\u00f3 department, including San Jos\u00e9 del Palmar, the epicenter of the earthquake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aid was collected at collection centers in Bogot\u00e1 and other cities in the country, in a citizen mobilization that has allowed for the gathering of tons of supplies to address the emergency, which has already left 294 dead, 3,935 injured, and 320 missing, in addition to 14,493 homes destroyed and 81,506 damaged, according to the latest report from the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Quibd\u00f3, the capital of Choc\u00f3, solidarity has also reached the department’s main hospital, which has received medicines, surgical-medical supplies, and even a refrigerator donated by the Colombian hematologist community to replace one of the pieces of equipment damaged by the earthquake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

International aid<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A plane from Chile arrived in the city of Pereira with 320 food kits, 200 toiletry kits, 346 hygiene kits, and 27,000 units of medication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For their part, teams from the United States from Fairfax (Virginia) and Los Angeles (California) are working alongside Colombian authorities in the assessment of damaged buildings and in determining which ones can be reoccupied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Cali, where at least 111 people have died, 82 soldiers from the Israel Defense Forces remain deployed, sent to support search and rescue efforts, including rescuers, engineers, and specialists in collapsed structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Abelardo de la Espriella spoke by phone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S. President Donald Trump, whom he thanked for the assistance received.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his conversation with Trump, he also requested the temporary suspension of tariffs affecting Colombian products to provide relief to business owners while the country faces the economic impact of the earthquake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De la Espriella has also begun to propose the reconstruction of the country as a joint task between the State and the private sector, with measures that include rent subsidies for families who have been left homeless, relief on utility payments, and a plan to rebuild or improve the affected homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the opposition, Senator Iv\u00e1n Cepeda accused the Government of “selective” management of international aid and announced that he will monitor its distribution to avoid political discrimination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Specifically, he stated that they have received complaints about people who were allegedly conditioned to receive aid if they had voted for De la Espriella.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tragedy continues<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The number of people affected by the earthquake, according to the UNGRD, amounts to 115,461, belonging to 54,008 families in 448 municipalities across 15 departments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The earthquake has also left 66 buildings collapsed, 241 health centers affected, 2,612 educational centers and 3,621 community centers damaged, in addition to 298 roads and 59 aqueducts affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Cali, one of the hardest-hit cities, Valentina Vanegas was found dead; she was the mother of the two-month-old baby rescued alive on Wednesday after remaining under the rubble for six days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daniela Largo, one of the people rescued alive in Pereira after spending about 36 hours under the rubble, also passed away after several days in an intensive care unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The emergency has also opened new fronts, such as the risk of human trafficking in the affected areas, as warned by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), which also called for extreme caution regarding potential fraudulent offers of employment, transport, or aid directed at people who have lost their support networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Six days after the earthquake, the tragedy continues to leave victims, but it also begins to show the scale of the response deployed inside and outside of Colombia, as the country moves from the immediate emergency to a stage in which it must face the care of the victims and the reconstruction of the devastated areas.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
