Miami (USA).- <\/strong>Hurricane Lala weakened into a tropical storm this Sunday after lashing Hawaii<\/strong> with strong winds and rain the day before, leaving some areas flooded and one person dead, although these conditions are expected to continue throughout the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One person died last night in a traffic accident attributed to poor weather conditions on Isla Grande<\/strong>, according to local authorities. This island was the most affected by the effects of Lala, which became a category 1 hurricane yesterday and passed very close to the archipelago, without making landfall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hawaii Governor Josh Green said the cyclone’s passage left accumulations of up to 33 centimeters of rain and power outages in 60,000 homes. The power outage also affected three hospitals, but the governor clarified that they remain operational using auxiliary generators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although Lala weakened this Sunday, the governor asked the population to remain cautious, since the effects of the storm will continue to be present throughout the day on all the islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) indicated in its latest bulletin that “destructive winds” and heavy rains continue on the Big Island and Maui County, while it expects conditions to worsen on Oahu, the island where Honolulu is located.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The agency revealed that the storm’s maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 110 kilometers per hour, and it expects weakening between today and Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, he warned that the combination of a dangerous storm surge and the tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to flood due to rising water levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NHC forecasts that Lala will continue moving westward and gradually move away from the archipelago in the coming days, when it may transform back into a hurricane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite its location in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, Hawaii does not usually suffer from hurricanes. Since 1950, only two have made landfall in this archipelago, so the proximity of Lala raised the alerts of state authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NHC estimates predicted that the hurricane would pass very close to Big Island or even make landfall last night, which would have made Lala the first cyclone to reach one of these islands since 1992.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the hurricane grazed the southern portion of the island and did not make landfall, according to the agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is an atypical year for cyclonic activity in the Pacific due to the ‘El Ni\u00f1o’ weather phenomenon, which involves an extraordinary warming of the waters in this ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This climate event, which normally occurs every two to seven years, usually increases the number of cyclones in the region, while reducing those in the Atlantic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
