Geneva.-<\/em><\/strong> The UN<\/a> launched an additional appeal to the international community this Friday to raise 148 million dollars more for Colombia in order to support the emergency caused by the earthquake eleven days ago, which affected 280,000 people, destroyed more than 31,000 homes, and caused damage to basic service and community facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the latest official figures reported by the Colombian authorities, the natural disaster caused 319 fatalities, more than 4,500 injuries, and 260 people are still missing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs spokesperson Jens Laerke said in Geneva that within the emergency needs “there is a subset of extreme priority needs that require 82 million dollars to support 127,000 highly vulnerable people.”<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He detailed that the most urgent needs are health-related, although there are also needs for food and nutrition, shelter, water, sanitation and hygiene, emergency education, and protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The earthquake has worsened a complex humanitarian situation in Colombia. Hundreds of thousands of families were already facing needs due to the armed conflict and limited access to basic services and livelihoods, especially in rural areas and on the Pacific coast (the earthquake’s epicenter),”<\/em><\/strong> the spokesperson explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The appeal launched today for Colombia is a complement to the existing annual humanitarian plan for this country, in which the United Nations requested 472 million dollars for 2026 to support the various crises the South American country is going through, 62% of which has been funded so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the specific case of the earthquake, donors have already mobilized 35 million dollars, in addition to another 5 million dollars that the UN has taken from its emergency fund for high-urgency humanitarian interventions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
