New York.-<\/strong> Thousands of Salvadorans residing in the United States remain in anticipation as September 9 approaches, the date set for the expiration of the current TPS El Salvador<\/strong> designation, while an official decision regarding the future of this immigration protection is still awaited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The situation affects around 170,000 Salvadoran citizens<\/strong> currently covered by Temporary Protected Status (TPS), many of whom have lived for more than two decades in U.S. territory, where they have established their families, jobs, and economic activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TPS allows its beneficiaries to remain temporarily in the United States<\/a> and obtain employment authorization, although it does not in itself constitute a direct path to permanent residence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The program for El Salvador was established in 2001<\/strong>, following the earthquakes that severely affected the Central American country. Since then, it has been extended on numerous occasions. The latest extension was approved for 18 months, from March 10, 2025, to September 9, 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TPS Salvador: deadline<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)<\/a> recently reported that the current TPS El Salvador<\/strong> designation and its related benefits are scheduled to end on September 9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The agency also announced that certain beneficiaries with pending applications to renew their Employment Authorization Documents will receive an extension of those permits until that same date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)<\/strong> has not yet made a definitive official announcement regarding the continuation or termination of TPS for El Salvador, which maintains uncertainty among beneficiaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

U.S. legislation establishes that the Government must review the country’s conditions before a designation expires. If it does not determine that those conditions have ceased to be met, the TPS is extended for another six months, although the Secretary of Homeland Security may provide for periods of 12 or 18 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TPS Salvador: family concern<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The proximity of the date has generated concern among families who depend on TPS El Salvador<\/strong> to remain and work legally in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Should the termination of the protection finally occur, those who do not possess another immigration status or independent authorization could lose the work permit associated with the TPS and become subject to the ordinary provisions of U.S. immigration laws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New York is among the states where a significant Salvadoran community resides, particularly in areas of Long Island and Queens<\/strong>, which is why authorities and immigrant advocacy organizations have warned about the possible economic and family consequences of an eventual termination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New York Governor Kathy Hochul<\/strong> has requested that the federal government maintain protections for immigrants covered by TPS and has warned that the departure of workers could affect both the public sector and private companies. The governor reiterated her opposition to the termination of these protections in a letter released on August 17.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As September 9 approaches, immigrant support organizations have recommended that beneficiaries individually review their situation with lawyers specializing in immigration, because some people may have other legal alternatives, depending on their particular circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
