Santo Domingo.-<\/strong> New York Democratic State Senator Luis R. Sep\u00falveda<\/strong> launched strong criticisms against the administration of United States President Donald Trump, questioning his relationship with institutions, his immigration policy, and his handling of the U.S. economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sep\u00falveda, who represents State Senate District 32<\/strong>, covering areas of The Bronx, made the remarks during a visit to the Dominican Republic. The legislator described Trump as the \u201cmost corrupt\u201d president that, in his view, the United States has had and maintained that some of his actions put the country’s institutional checks and balances at risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sep\u00falveda’s status as a Democratic senator for New York’s 32nd District is documented in the official records of the state Senate, where he also chairs the Judiciary Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Questions Trump’s relationship with institutions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Among his main criticisms, Sep\u00falveda stated that Trump has shown little respect for Congress and for certain constitutional limits, while questioning the business activities carried out by people in his family circle while he holds the Presidency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The senator also referred to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity and expressed concern about the consequences that, in his opinion, it could have for the accountability of leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2024 Supreme Court decision established absolute immunity for certain actions linked to the president’s exclusive constitutional powers and a presumption of immunity for other official acts. The court determined, however, that unofficial acts are not protected by presidential immunity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sep\u00falveda maintained that the U.S. political system must maintain effective oversight mechanisms over any president and warned about what he considers an excessive concentration of power in the current administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Criticism of immigration policy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The New York legislator also questioned the immigration operations carried out by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during the Trump administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sep\u00falveda expressed concern about the way some arrests and deportations are carried out and defended the right of immigrants to receive the corresponding guarantees within the U.S. judicial system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The senator has maintained a public position in favor of immigrants’ rights. His New York Senate office has previously distributed guidance directed at residents on how to act during encounters with ICE agents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The issue has a particular impact in The Bronx, a territory represented by Sep\u00falveda and where a large population of Latino origin resides, including thousands of Dominicans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Economy will be a determining factor in elections<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Sep\u00falveda also considered that the performance of the economy will have significant weight in the November legislative elections and maintained that the rising cost of living could electorally affect the Republican Party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The politician attributed part of the pressure on consumers to tariff policies and energy price behavior, and predicted that segments of independent voters could move away from Republican candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most recent data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)<\/strong> show that year-over-year inflation stood at 3.4% in July 2026<\/strong>. Food increased by 3% over the last 12 months, while the energy index recorded a year-over-year increase of 14.7%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sep\u00falveda stated that those economic conditions could favor the Democrats in the midterm elections, although the result will depend on the voters’ decision and the evolution of the economy over the coming months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
