Bogot\u00e1<\/strong>.- The death toll from the 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck Colombia two weeks ago rose to 331 this Monday, according to a new report from the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD), which also accounts for 4,439 injured, 240 missing, and 364 people rescued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The earthquake, which occurred on August 10 with its epicenter in the municipality of San Jos\u00e9 del Palmar, in the department of Choc\u00f3 (west), affected 494 municipalities in 16 departments, where there are 361,353 victims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The emergency also leaves 178,555 homes damaged and 31,540 destroyed, while 5,884 buildings suffered damage and another 603 collapsed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the affected infrastructure are 378 health centers, 3,731 educational centers, 4,170 community centers, 441 roads, five airports, 118 aqueducts, 73 vehicular bridges, and 16 pedestrian bridges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Colombian government began this Monday the reconstruction phase of the affected areas, during a visit by President Abelardo de la Espriella to Quibd\u00f3, the capital of Choc\u00f3 and one of the regions hardest hit by the earthquake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Today the reconstruction of the homeland begins from Quibd\u00f3<\/strong>“, said the president, who presented the first measures for this new stage of emergency response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of this process, the Executive announced the initial delivery of 4,480 tons of materials to repair homes and launched an assisted repair and reconstruction strategy, in which citizens provide the labor with the guidance of engineers and other professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, the business conglomerate Grupo Argos increased from 300 to 1,000 the number of rapid-construction homes it committed to delivering, of which up to 600 may be allocated to Choc\u00f3<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Families whose homes have minor damage will receive materials to repair them, while those whose houses cannot be recovered will receive a new one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starting August 26, households whose homes have been destroyed or rendered uninhabitable will begin receiving a monthly stipend of 875,452 pesos (about 285 dollars) for three months, for a total of 2.6 million pesos (about 855 dollars) per household.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
