{"id":522483,"date":"2026-08-25T17:30:03","date_gmt":"2026-08-25T21:30:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/deultimominuto.com\/en\/?p=522483"},"modified":"2026-08-25T17:30:07","modified_gmt":"2026-08-25T21:30:07","slug":"spain-moves-to-tighten-controls-on-irregular-immigration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deultimominuto.com\/en\/international\/spain-moves-to-tighten-controls-on-irregular-immigration\/","title":{"rendered":"Spain moves to tighten controls on irregular immigration"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spain\u2019s government has approved preliminary drafts of a <strong>new Asylum Law and a reform of the Foreigners Law<\/strong> aimed at strengthening border controls, speeding up asylum procedures and facilitating the return of people who enter the country irregularly and do not qualify for international protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reforms seek to adapt Spanish legislation to the <strong>European Pact on Migration and Asylum<\/strong>, whose provisions began applying in the European Union on June 12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the main changes would introduce mandatory <strong>screening procedures<\/strong> for people who cross the EU\u2019s external borders without meeting regular entry requirements. The process would include medical examinations, vulnerability assessments, identification, biometric data collection and security checks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spain plans to limit this initial screening to <strong>72 hours<\/strong>, although a judge could extend it in justified individual cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reform would also establish mandatory border procedures for certain asylum applications, with a maximum resolution period of <strong>12 weeks<\/strong>. If an application is rejected, authorities could issue a return decision. A similar procedure would apply to people who enter irregularly and do not qualify for international protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government also proposes an accelerated asylum procedure that would have to be resolved within <strong>three months<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said the objective is to create a system that is more \u201cagile, effective, orderly and guarantees rights,\u201d while authorities maintain that the reforms will continue to protect vulnerable people and minors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The measures were approved in a first round and are <strong>not yet final<\/strong>.
