Beijing.-<\/em><\/strong> China mobilized hundreds of personnel and heavy machinery this Wednesday for rescue operations following the flood that struck the Tibetan county of Gyirong (southwest), bordering Nepal, while authorities have not released official figures on deaths or missing persons on the Chinese side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For its part, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC<\/a>, the country’s main economic planning body) announced an emergency allocation of 100 million yuan (about 14 million dollars) to support the recovery of infrastructure and basic services in the affected areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to state television CCTV, authorities activated a second-level national disaster response and deployed 249 members of fire rescue teams, as well as 325 personnel from state-owned specialized engineering and construction companies, accompanied by machinery to clear roads and facilitate operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Images broadcast by the network showed excavators and other vehicles working on roads covered by a layer of mud and stones that, according to CCTV, reached approximately 1.5 meters in thickness in some spots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The work is also being carried out under adverse weather conditions, with light rain in the area and forecasts of continued precipitation over the next two days, while minimum temperatures could drop below 10 degrees, local press reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gyirong, located in the southwest of the Tibetan prefecture of Shigatse, has about 18,000 inhabitants and is at an average altitude of over 4,000 meters, according to the county government office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the absence of an official Chinese balance, the state agency Xinhua had reported “multiple victims and missing persons” after a flow of mud and rocks reached the Gyirong area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The area is located in a border region of Tibet where the movement of foreign citizens is usually subject to specific restrictions and permits and must be organized through authorized agencies, without ruling out the possibility that there may be foreign tourists among those affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the Nepalese side, authorities counted at least 16 dead and 384 travelers missing in the Rasuwa district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Government of Nepal preliminarily attributed the flood to a 4.4 magnitude earthquake that reportedly caused a large landslide and blocked the course of the Bhote Koshi River, with the accumulated water subsequently being released. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
