United States<\/strong>.- The next Atlantic storm will be named Dolly<\/strong>, a name established years in advance by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and which has no relation to the recent passing of the American singer Dolly Parton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The coincidence occurs while the National Hurricane Center (NHC) keeps under surveillance an area of showers and thunderstorms located south of the Cape Verde Islands, off the coast of Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the meteorological agency, conditions could favor the gradual development of the system, which would have the possibility of becoming a tropical depression during the next week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If it continues to organize and its maximum sustained winds reach at least 39 miles per hour<\/strong>, about 63 kilometers per hour, it would be classified as a tropical storm and would officially be named Dolly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The name Dolly was previously established<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The eventual use of Dolly occurs one day after the death of Dolly Parton became known, but the name of the storm does not constitute a tribute to the performer<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tropical cyclone names are selected following procedures established by the World Meteorological Organization, and the lists corresponding to the Atlantic are reused every six years. These follow an alphabetical order and alternate between male and female names. The purpose is to facilitate the identification of the phenomena and the communication of notices and warnings to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The WMO also seeks to use short names that are familiar in the corresponding regions and easy to pronounce, and some may be retired from the lists when a cyclone causes loss of life or damage of such magnitude that reusing its name could be inappropriate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Atlantic has already recorded three storms in 2026<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Before Dolly, the 2026 hurricane season has recorded three named tropical storms: Arthur, Bertha, and Cristobal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arthur developed in June and made landfall on the U.S. Gulf Coast, while Bertha produced rain in parts of Louisiana and Texas during July; Cristobal, the third named system of the season, formed in early August in the Atlantic and subsequently dissipated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In that previously established order, Dolly corresponds to the name that the fourth cyclone to reach tropical storm category should receive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NHC monitors system off the coast of Africa<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

While the next Atlantic storm will be named Dolly<\/strong>, meteorologists are keeping their attention on the system located in the eastern Atlantic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NHC reported early this Wednesday that there are conditions that could allow for further organization of shower and thunderstorm activity over the next few days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
