Kathmandu.-<\/strong> Nepalese authorities raised the number of bodies recovered to 669 this Saturday following Wednesday’s devastating flood<\/strong> in the Bhote Koshi<\/strong> basin, bringing the total death toll between Nepal and Tibet to 676 people<\/strong> and leaving nearly 3,000 missing<\/strong> on both sides of the border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new official toll published by the Nepalese Police<\/strong> sets the number of bodies found in its territory at 669, with the majority located in the southern districts of Chitwan (248) and East Nawalparasi (158), where the mass of water and stones swept the victims away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Added to this figure are the seven deaths that China has reported in the Tibetan county of Gyirong<\/strong>, where the border crossing with Nepal is located, which was the scene of one of the most violent images of the flood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The saturation of morgues<\/strong> and the rapid decomposition of bodies recovered from rivers have forced local authorities, such as in the East Nawalparasi (Nawalpur) district, to begin mass DNA sampling before proceeding to bury unidentified or unrecognizable bodies in community forest areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the thousands of emergency teams deployed are trying to continue their work on a surface of mud that has hardened and appears to have buried dozens of people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regarding the affected foreigners, the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB)<\/a><\/strong> has detailed that a total of 184 tourists have been rescued alive and 420 remain missing. Among those rescued this Saturday were two Spanish citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Nepalese government has requested international assistance regarding forensics and body preservation, as well as the deployment of technical teams to try to rescue hundreds of workers feared trapped in flooded tunnels of the basin’s hydroelectric plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initial estimates regarding the impact of the massive flood that occurred in Nepal<\/a> indicate that some 93,000 people may have been affected, although aid organizations have not yet reached certain flooded areas, so that figure could increase, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) said this Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Government has mobilized more than 30,000 military personnel who are providing direct assistance to rescue efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The IFRC also reported problems getting relief items by road to Rasuwa, where needs are known to be significant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In contrast, in Nuwakot, the Nepal Red Cross has begun delivering emergency aid to those who have lost their homes, including food, water, hygiene kits, mattresses, and blankets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
