Oyo Nyimba ascended the throne of Uganda at three years old<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Kampala.-<\/strong> Omukama Oyo Nyimba<\/strong>,<\/a> one of Uganda’s most influential traditional kings, who became the world’s youngest monarch<\/strong> upon ascending the throne at just three years old, passed away last night at the age of 34, his Kingdom of Tooro reported this Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that I announce the passing of His Majesty the Omukama of Tooro, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV,” said his Prime Minister, Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire, on the social network X.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

“His Majesty leaves behind a prince as his heir, whose identity will be formally revealed at the appropriate time, in accordance with the traditions and customs of the Kingdom of Tooro,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The news surprised Ugandans, who were unaware that the king was ill<\/strong> and who until now had only received a brief statement, published this past Thursday, which informed that the monarch was in “critical condition” and asked the Batoro people to “keep His Majesty in their prayers”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The king died at 22:00 local time on Thursday (19:00 GMT), according to Rwomiire, who has not yet revealed the cause of death.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The monarch became the youngest king in the world on September 12, 1995, when at only three years old he inherited the throne from his recently deceased father, Kaboyo Olimi III. Given his young age, his mother, the queen mother Best Kemigisa<\/strong>, served as regent during the first years of his reign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout three decades as Omukama, Oyo Nyimba primarily performed cultural and traditional roles, as kings recognized by the Constitution of Uganda lack political powers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his three decades as king, Oyo placed special emphasis on youth<\/strong>, education, healthcare, environmental conservation, and development, while promoting the cultural identity and heritage of Tooro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oyo was a private person and little was known about his personal life beyond his love for football and his favorite team, Arsenal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His Majesty the King had a diverse background, having been homeschooled during his formative years and subsequently accessing selective learning environments that fostered the upbringing of a monarch.<\/p>\n\n\n

The monarch never publicly married nor had a queen consort<\/strong>, despite repeated requests from his mother, the Anglican clergy, and his own subjects to take that step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was nominated Global Ambassador<\/strong> to end HIV\/AIDS by 2030 as a result of tireless campaigns to raise awareness among young people in various universities and higher education centers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tooro, located in southwestern Uganda and with its capital in the city of Fort Portal, is one of the five traditional kingdoms recognized by the country’s Constitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Omukama, as the king of Tooro is known, lacks political powers and serves as a cultural and traditional authority, but exerts great influence, especially among the Batoro, the main ethnic group in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tooro was founded around 1830, when Prince Kaboyo, son of King Nyamutukura Kyebambe III of Bunyoro, rebelled against his father and proclaimed the independence of the kingdom’s southern province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Uganda’s traditional kingdoms were abolished in 1967 by President Milton Obote, a decision that sparked deep resentment in the center and west of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Almost three decades later, the current president, Yoweri Museveni, restored them through the 1995 Constitution, although without returning political powers to them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
